Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior Battery Performance & Development Engineer with strong expertise in lithium-ion battery technology to support and technically lead battery performance development for future BEV, PHEV and HEV products.
The role will focus on defining battery performance requirements based on European customer usage, real-world driving conditions and competitor benchmarking, and translating these requirements into technical targets for our China R&D teams and battery suppliers.
The engineer is expected not only to perform analysis and testing, but also to provide technical direction, challenge engineering proposals, review development results and guide battery performance optimization throughout the product development process.
Key Responsibilities
- Define battery performance requirements and KPIs for future vehicle programs, including:
- Energy and usable SOC window
- Peak and continuous charge/discharge power
- Power capability vs. SOC and temperature
- SOH and performance retention
- Cycle and calendar ageing
- Thermal performance
- Low-temperature and low-SOC capability
- Fast-charging performance
- Derating and protection strategies
- Technically guide and support China R&D battery teams in battery performance development and optimization.
- Work directly with cell, module and pack suppliers to define performance targets, review technical solutions and evaluate development results.
- Review and challenge supplier specifications, test plans, validation results and performance models.
- Support the definition of SOH targets and ageing requirements, ensuring that battery energy and power performance remain competitive throughout vehicle lifetime.
- Identify battery performance gaps and drive technical improvement actions together with internal engineering teams and suppliers.
- Conduct and lead competitor benchmarking of BEV, PHEV and HEV battery systems.
- Evaluate battery performance under European real-world conditions, including Autobahn high-speed driving, repeated acceleration, mountain driving, low SOC, cold/hot temperatures, fast charging and high-load operation.
- Analyse battery data and identify limitations related to cell capability, ageing, thermal management, BMS calibration and pack design.
- Translate European benchmarking and vehicle-test findings into future battery technology and product-development requirements.
- Support technical design reviews and key development decisions from concept phase through vehicle validation.
Job Requirements
- Master's degree or PhD in Battery Technology, Electrochemistry, Energy Storage, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or a related battery-focused discipline.
- Ideally 5+ years of experience in automotive lithium-ion battery development.
- Strong technical knowledge of:
- Li-ion cell characteristics and electrochemistry
- SOC / OCV characteristics
- Peak and continuous power capability
- Battery thermal behaviour
- Cell degradation and performance retention
- Fast charging
- BMS performance limits and protection strategies
- Experience in battery requirement definition and supplier technical management is strongly preferred.
- Ability to technically lead discussions with battery suppliers and internal engineering teams.
- Experience translating vehicle-level requirements into cell, module and pack-level performance targets.
- Automotive BEV/PHEV/HEV battery development experience is highly preferred.
- Strong analytical, technical leadership and problem-solving skills.
- Fluent English required; German is an advantage.
