THE ROLE AND THE TEAM

As a Senior Applied Scientist within the Pricing Traffic & Trading Tech organization at Zalando we are dedicated to utilizing cutting-edge research to build and refine the scientific models that optimize key commercial decisions for our 10Bn business.

Our team has developed a bespoke experimentation platform that allows us to rigorously test improvements to our core pricing algorithms and conduct large-scale experiments on the effectiveness of commercial incentives like vouchers.

We are looking for a passionate and experienced scientist to join us in a role with a dual focus: enhancing the foundations of our scientific decision‑making while also applying those foundations to critical business problems.

• Lead the evolution of our experimentation platform. Research and implement advanced methodologies in causal inference and experimental design to improve our platform's capabilities. Enhance the toolset and empower other teams to run more robust and insightful experiments.
• Drive voucher optimization. Utilize our experimentation platform and modelling expertise to build a sophisticated optimization product for vouchers, designing strategies for customer targeting and assortment selection.
• Develop state‑of‑the‑art machine learning and econometric models. Own end‑to‑end model development to understand the true incremental impact of interventions and collaborate with ML engineers to bring your models to production.
• Champion scientific excellence and innovation. Keep the team updated with the latest research in causal machine learning, econometrics and optimization, translating theoretical advances into practical applications that create tangible business value.
• Mentor and coach fellow scientists. Provide feedback and support to junior colleagues, helping them develop into outstanding researchers and practitioners.

WED LOVE TO MEET YOU IF:

• Strong academic background in economics, econometrics, statistics or a STEM field (preferably PhD).
• Strong expertise in experimentation and causal inference.
• Good understanding of economic concepts.
• Experience related to pricing and e‑commerce is a plus.
• Strong experience with Python in applied contexts – experience with relevant data and ML frameworks (e.g., PySpark, LightGBM, scikit‑learn, PyTorch).
• Experience building machine learning models and solving real‑world business problems.
• Experience translating research into applications with a good balance between scientific rigor and business relevance.
• Experience working with customer‑level data is a plus.
• Ability to collaborate with external stakeholders and clearly communicate results to diverse technical and non‑technical audiences.
• Self‑driven intrinsic motivation for result implementation (action orientation).
