Your mission

We are seeking a skilled and innovative scientist to develop process liquids for theion’s proprietary sulfur crystal growth technology. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in organic chemistry and hands‑on experience in the synthesis and purification of ionic liquids and solvents. This role focuses on designing, synthesizing, and optimizing complex solvent systems and ionic liquids with tailored properties for sulfur processing. As an integral part of the team, you will contribute to scaling these materials from laboratory development to pilot production and advancing theion’s next‑generation Li‑S battery technology.

  • Develop and deliver binary, ternary, quaternary, and other complex solvent compositions
  • Synthesize and purify high-dielectric-constant solvents with low-viscosity properties
  • Synthesize and purify high-dielectric-constant ionic liquids with low-viscosity properties
  • Design organic solvents to achieve specific sulfur solubility and surface tension
  • Optimize the chemical and thermal stability of ionic liquids and solvents
  • Design ionic liquids and solvents for compatibility under electric fields
  • Functionalize small organic molecules
  • Scale up ionic liquid and solvent production to 5L for pilot production
  • Conduct structured experiments and independently analyze, interpret, and present results
  • Collaborate closely with material scientists, chemists, electrochemists, and process engineers to advance Li‑S battery development
Your profile
Absolute-must-haves:
  • PhD in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrochemistry or a closely related discipline
  • Minimum 2 years of hands‑on experience in the synthesis of ionic liquids or solvents
  • Willingness to relocate to Berlin
  • Fluent in speaking English – our company language is English, incl. all internal communication and meetings.
  • Knowledge of analytical and physicochemical characterization methods relevant to liquid systems.
Good-to-haves:
  • Minimum 2 years of hands‑on experience in multi‑step organic synthesis of ionic liquids and/or solvents
  • Understanding of molecular interactions of solvents and/or ionic liquids in high‑voltage electric fields and DEP
  • Experience in protection and deprotection chemistry
