Zusammenfassung

Universität Hamburg invites applications for a Research Associate (Postdoc) in the Functional Ecology Group. The fixed-term position begins 01.12.2026 for three years with possible extension, and includes teaching hours (4 h/w) and active research in energy budgeting, thermoregulation and nutrition ecology of small mammals.

You will lead independent projects, collaborate internationally, and have opportunities to attract external funding while contributing to field work in Hamburg and beyond.

Qualifikationen

Research Associate (Postdoc) Functional Ecology § 28 Subsection 2 HmbHG

Start date01.12.2026, fixed for a period of three years (This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act [Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG]).The contract provides for a maximum extension of up to three years depending on the associate’s achievements during the first stage. Providing that a position is available and that requirements have been fulfilled, the associate may apply for temporary civil servant status in accordance with Section 28 subsection 2 HmbHG.

Scope of workfull-time position suitable for part-time

Your responsibilities

Duties include teaching and research in the respective department or institute. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications as well as acquire teaching experience. These duties are intended to promote academic achievement. Therefore, at least one-third of set working hours will be made available for the associate’s own academic work.

The successful candidate is expected to strengthen and expand the research focus and methods of the Functional Ecology Group (Prof. Dr. Kathrin Dausmann). We are interested in the “Costs of Life” and focus on the ecological and physiological responses animal species employ to cope with changing and extreme conditions (seasonality, climate change, urbanization). The combination of ecological research and physiological methods is central in our approach, particularly in respect to energy budgeting, thermoregulation and nutrition ecology of small mammals. You should have a background and expertise in these fields and the relevant methods, and should be interested in advancing these, as well as experience in field work.

You will have the possibility to establish your own, independent research profile and attract external funding. Especially welcome are ideas for field projects in Hamburg. International scientific experience is very welcome, and you should enjoy teaching and supervising students. We offer a stimulating, interactive and friendly research environment, frequently enriched by international guests and students. Teaching hours are 4 p/w (during the semester) and mainly includes ecological and physiological courses on the BSc- and MSc-level.

Your profile

A university degree in a relevant field, plus doctorate.

We are looking for a highly motivated team player, with a background in functional ecology, especially in the fields of energy budgeting, thermoregulation and nutrition ecology, reflected in respective publications. Please provide a convincing research concept. We expect experience in experimental lab and field work of small mammals. Excellent knowledge in statistical procedures and a good proficiency of written and spoken English is a requirement.
