The German Historical Institute London is seeking a Research Associate with a particular research interest in medieval history (with a focus on late medieval English history) for a part-time project position to start on 1 February 2026.

About your role:

This is a 24-month fixed-term contract for a part-time position (32h/week) as part of the project ‘Money, History, and Moral Economies: Communicative Functions of Monetary Information in the Institutional Historiography of the Later Middle Ages (1250–1530)’ funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

The starting annual salary is between £53,284.80 and £54,508.80 depending on professional experience. The place of employment is London, with mobile working opportunities.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Conduct academic research on specific case studies within the framework of the overarching project and contribute to the project database.
  • Organise an academic conference and coordinate the publication of an edited volume based on the proceedings.
  • Help promote the project to a wider audience.

Research experience related to the project topic is desirable.

About you:

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • A PhD in medieval history (submitted by the time of the interview; viva voce may still be pending)
  • A proven understanding of English history in the late Middle Ages
  • Competence in dealing with manuscript and printed sources
  • Knowledge of Latin and Middle English

Desirable Qualifications & Experience:

  • Experience in academic event organisation and communications work
  • Relevant publications.
