Mission
The R&D Manager – Software will lead the engineering team responsible for developing the organization’s programming‑language and compiler ecosystem, including core developer tools that translate high‑level quantum programs into production‑ready executable systems. The role combines technical leadership and people management, driving the technical roadmap while fostering a high‑performing engineering culture. Working closely with senior technical leaders and cross‑functional teams, the successful candidate will guide architecture, software delivery and engineering excellence across the complete software development lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor and develop a high‑performing software engineering team, establishing clear objectives and supporting individual career growth.
- Recruit, onboard and retain talented software engineers while promoting an inclusive, collaborative and high‑performance engineering culture.
- Continuously improve engineering processes, delivery practices and team effectiveness.
Technical Strategy and Software Architecture
- Define and execute the technical roadmap in partnership with software leadership and senior technical contributors.
- Provide technical leadership across programming languages, compiler technologies and developer tooling.
- Drive architectural decisions that ensure scalability, maintainability, quality and long‑term evolution of the software platform.
Software Delivery and Project Execution
- Coordinate development activities throughout the complete software lifecycle, from research and prototyping through testing, documentation and production releases.
- Plan team capacity, manage priorities, risks, dependencies and delivery milestones.
- Ensure high engineering standards through design reviews, code reviews, technical problem solving and implementation support.
Cross‑functional Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with research, product, applications, hardware and software teams across international locations.
- Ensure software interfaces and development priorities align with hardware capabilities and strategic product objectives.
- Support effective collaboration between geographically distributed engineering teams, including occasional international travel.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum of five years of relevant experience in software engineering, compiler development, programming languages or closely related technical R&D environments.
- Demonstrated experience leading technical projects or engineering teams, including technical direction, mentoring and delivery coordination.
- Proven experience making architectural decisions for production software with strong emphasis on software quality, testing, documentation and maintainability.
- Excellent planning, communication and stakeholder management skills within multidisciplinary technical organizations.
Preferred Experience
- Experience developing quantum software, particularly quantum programming languages, compiler infrastructures, intermediate representations or execution tooling.
- Understanding of quantum computing concepts, hardware‑software co‑design and hybrid classical/quantum programming models.
- Experience designing or implementing programming languages, compiler passes, type systems or intermediate representations.
- Strong software development experience using Rust and/or Python.
- Previous line management experience including coaching, recruiting and career development of engineering teams.
- Experience working with internationally distributed engineering organizations.
- Experience contributing to open‑source software projects and developer communities.
- Proven ability to transform research concepts and prototypes into production‑quality software adopted by customers or engineering teams.
