Overview

The professorship will initially be for a period of six years and will be associated with the duties of a senior physician (Oberarzt) in the Neurological Clinic. The appointment will be under a private-law contract with the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz.

Research focus and program

The Neurological Clinic has a particularly strong research focus in Neuroimmunology and holds the spokespersonship of a collaborative research center on Multiple Sclerosis. The successful candidate should establish an independent research program in the area of Neuroimmunology. Prerequisites for appointment are a completed third-level degree in human medicine, aptitude for teaching and a doctoral degree. An additional degree in the natural sciences is desirable. In addition, it is expected that the successful candidate has experience in the scientific supervision of staff, as well as an excellent record in publication, application for competitive third-party funding and collaboration. Applicants should already have completed or be on the verge of completing a specialist qualification (Facharztanerkennung) in neurology. Other usual prerequisites are listed in §49 of the Higher Education Act of Rhineland-Palatinate (§ 49 Hochschulgesetz Rheinland-Pfalz).

Research environment

As part of its expanding research profile, the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz has established the Forschungszentrum Immuntherapie (FZI / http://www.fzi.uni-mainz.de ) and the Focus Program Translational Neuroscience (FTN / http://www.ftn.uni-mainz.de ). The FTN is part of a supraregional structure, the Rhine-Main Neuroscience Network (rmn2 / http://www.rmn2.de ), which coordinates the neurosciences in the Rhine-Main area. Within this network, there are currently several joint research projects such as collaborative research centers (CRC TR-128: Initiating/effector and regulating mechanisms of Multiple Sclerosis – from a new understanding of pathogenesis to treatment; CRC 1080: Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms of Neural Homeostasis) and research groups (FG 926: Physiology and pathophysiology of endocannabinoid systems; FG 1341: Barrel Cortex Function). Further joint initiatives are in preparation.
