The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) invites applications for a PhD student position in the Research Group “Nonsmooth Variational Problems and Operator Equations” in Berlin.
The successful candidate will work on optimization or inverse problems for PDEs, with opportunities to develop and implement efficient numerical algorithms and pursue independent research toward doctoral qualification.
The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB comprises seven non-university research institutes in Berlin which are funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes belong to the Leibniz Association.

The position is dedicated to the analysis of these problems as well as the design and implementation of efficient algorithms for their solution.
We are looking for: A highly motivated, outstanding student with a master’s degree in mathematics. A strong background in mathematical optimization and good experience with the theory and numerical methods for partial differential equations are required.

The appointment is limited to three years. The reduced work schedule is 29.25 hours per week, and the salary is according to the German TVoeD Bund scale.
