Prof. Rutsch's research group is investigating the molecular basis, pathogenetic principles, and therapeutic options for ectopic calcifications. We are currently looking for a committed doctoral candidate to join our ongoing project. The interdisciplinary research project, which is being carried out by Prof. Rutsch's research group in collaboration with the Department of Ophthalmology at the UKM and the Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy at the University of Münster, focuses on the treatment of retinal calcifications, which play a role in the rare disease pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) but also in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The innovative therapeutic approach is based on a nanoparticulate system that dissolves calcifications present in the retina.
The core project of the doctoral candidate will involve testing various forms of application in animal models. We have numerous state-of-the-art technologies at our disposal for this purpose, in particular electron microscopy, fluorescence reflectance imaging, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, fluorescence angiography, and electroretinography.
