A leading research university in Germany is looking for a part-time PhD researcher for precision spectroscopy of atoms and molecules in plasmas using advanced laser methods. The position requires a Master of Science degree in physics or chemistry, and offers the opportunity for significant scientific contribution and mentorship responsibilities. Applications are encouraged from a diverse pool of candidates.
Faculty of Physics and Astronomy: Experimental Physics V – Spectroscopy of Atoms and Molecules by Laser Methods.
We are looking for a fixed‑term PhD researcher (m/f/x) for precision spectroscopy of atoms and molecules in plasmas with advanced laser‑based diagnostics (infrared frequency comb spectroscopy, THz spectroscopy). The position is part‑time (29.8725 hours/week = 75 %) and starts in March 2026. Duration: 3 years.
The chair for Experimental Physics V – Spectroscopy of Atoms and Molecules by Laser Methods at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, Ruhr University Bochum, investigates physicochemical processes in low and atmospheric‑pressure plasmas. The research focuses on the development and application of advanced laser‑based diagnostics from UV to THz to characterize plasmas and their interaction with surfaces, and on highly sensitive laser‑based diagnostics using novel lasers in the mid‑ and far‑infrared, including cavity‑enhanced spectroscopy, frequency comb spectroscopy, and THz spectroscopy. The research covers the entire spectrum from basic research to applied research and research with industrial partners and includes strong collaborations with plasma modelling.
The position is salaried and based on the collective agreement of the Länder (TV‑L). If the personal and collective agreement requirements are met, the employee will receive pay grade E 13 TV‑L.
Place of work: Ruhr University Bochum. Teaching load will be calculated according to § 3 of the Lehrverpflichtungsverordnung (state of North Rhine‑Westphalia). The university operates primarily in German and English; competence in at least one of these languages is required, and a willingness to learn the other is a prerequisite.

The Ruhr‑Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is Ruhr‑Universität Bochum’s declared aim.
The Ruhr‑Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. Applications from women are requested. In areas where they are underrepresented, preference is given to candidates with equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
