Jobbeschreibung

MSF is an independent international medical relief organisation, with 28 offices worldwide. When large-scale epidemics occur, when areas in crisis are too dangerous for many other organisations, then our medical teams are there to assist the affected population. We organise basic medical care, treat the injured, carry out vaccination campaigns, train local staff and build up medical infrastructure. In long-term aid projects our teams fight diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, sleeping sickness, and HIV/AIDS.

Pediatrician
tasks and responsibilities

Whether it is during epidemics, disasters or other crises: As a pediatrician, you will be helping where hardly anyone else can.

Working for us as a pediatrician can be very challenging. Your deployment might be to an acute war or crisis area where you only have access to the most basic technical aids. This means that along with having a wide range of practical experience, you will also need to be very flexible and resourceful.

You will be responsible for the inpatient care of seriously ill newborns, treat sick, injured or malnourished children and possibly work with displaced or refugee families. Your tasks will also include things like helping combat a measles or meningitis epidemic.

In addition to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of neonatal and pediatric conditions, you will also be responsible for managing, training and supervising staff in the pediatric team. As a pediatrician, you will not only be responsible for the smooth running of the pediatric ward, but also for further training staff and the collection and evaluation of data.

Our Requirements
  • Licensed physician with completed residency training or ongoing residency training with at least three years of professional experience in pediatrics as well as in the NICU and PICU
  • Experience with pediatric emergencies
  • Knowledge of TB and HIV is an advantage
  • Willingness to be deployed to acute crisis areas as well as to take medical responsibility for the team in the project
  • Experience in providing professional guidance, education or training to others is an advantage
  • Ideally experience in personnel management
  • Availability of at least twelve months, ideally for longer
  • Travel or work experience in low-income countries of the Global South
  • Participation in a tropical medicine course. A list of possible courses can be found here (all information provided without guarantee)
  • Very good knowledge of English and ideally further language skills in French, Spanish, Arabic or Russian. Good knowledge of French can have a significant influence on the overall assessment and final selection decision
  • Ability to work independently, to cultivate team spirit and be highly flexible
  • Willingness to work in accordance with Médecins Sans Frontières humanitarian principles, charter and mission statement
  • Organizational and improvisational skills as well as a high level of mental and physical resilience
What do we offer
  • Salary sufficient to cover costs at home while you are in the field
  • A per diem during assignment to cover food expenses and other local purchases in local currency
  • Round-trip transportation to and from assignment
  • Room and board during assignment
  • A comprehensive insurance package, including health and emergency evacuation insurance
  • Holiday leave (depending on project)

We strongly recommend that you attend a webinar or HR info event about working with MSF to learn more about responsibilities and requirements before you apply.
