Optical Test & Characterisation Engineer
Location: Berlin, Germany
We are seeking an experienced Optical Test & Characterisation Engineer to design and develop test setups for the measurement and characterisation of advanced optical and photonic components.
This is a hands‑on engineering role focused on optical testing, automated measurement and data analysis within a technically demanding R&D environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop optical test and characterisation setups for components, modules and systems.
- Develop measurement methods to assess optical performance, accuracy, stability and reliability.
- Work with photodiodes, cameras, spectrometers, lasers and other optical instrumentation.
- Configure and optimise optical measurement systems for repeatable and high-quality test results.
- Develop automated testing and measurement workflows using Python, LabVIEW and/or MATLAB.
- Integrate optical, electronic and software components into automated test platforms.
- Develop data‑acquisition and signal‑processing solutions for optical measurements.
- Analyse test data and identify performance trends, measurement errors and potential system improvements.
- Automate calibration, testing, data collection and reporting processes where appropriate.
- Troubleshoot complex optical, electronic and instrumentation issues.
- Define test procedures, acceptance criteria and characterisation methodologies.
- Validate test setups and ensure measurement results are accurate, repeatable and traceable.
- Work closely with optical, electronics, software and systems engineers during product development.
- Support prototype testing, design verification and technology development activities.
- Document test configurations, measurement procedures, results and technical findings.
- Continuously improve test efficiency, automation and measurement capability.
Requirements
- Degree or equivalent experience in Optical Engineering, Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Several years of experience in optical testing, characterisation or photonic measurement.
- Strong practical experience with optical test equipment, including photodiodes, cameras, spectrometers and lasers.
- Experience developing automated measurement and test systems.
- Programming experience with Python, LabVIEW and/or MATLAB.
- Strong understanding of optical measurement principles and data analysis.
- Experience with calibration, system validation and troubleshooting.
- Strong experimental, analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Comfortable working in multidisciplinary R&D and engineering environments.
