Mission Systems Equipment Design Responsible (d/f/m)

Airbus Defence and Space is seeking a Mission Systems Equipment Design Responsible who will be the technical authority for airborne equipment throughout its lifecycle for various weapon systems. The role transforms operational and system-level needs into robust, certifiable equipment solutions, working closely with international suppliers and multidisciplinary engineering teams. It ensures that equipment designs meet demanding performance, qualification and certification requirements while supporting integration, testing and in-service operations.

Location: Manching, about an hour’s drive north of Munich.

Responsibilities
  • Own the technical responsibility of airborne mission systems equipment throughout the full development lifecycle, including in‑service support activities.
  • Prepare and validate Equipment technical specifications and other contractual documents. Manage equipment requirements from higher-level system architecture and customer specifications down to equipment-level allocation.
  • Provide technical management of suppliers of airborne equipment: evaluate, follow up on design and qualification, manage milestones, stages of involvement, validate and accept deliverables, handle limitations and deviations, support defect investigations and repairs, harmonise and control supplier and programme plans.
  • Review technical solutions, challenge design decisions when necessary, and support issue resolution during development and integration phases.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable aeronautical and contractual standards and certification requirements (e.g., DO‑254) during design, qualification, repair, obsolescence and re‑design activities.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities with internal specialists (safety, EMC, environmental qualification, RM&T, Quality, ILS, Airworthiness, etc.).
  • Interface with customers, partner companies and certification authorities for technical matters related to equipment functionalities, design, qualification and problem resolution.
  • Monitor and support subsequent equipment integration, including subsystem, system verification and flight tests.
  • Support requests concerning equipment queries, in-service occurrence reports and defect investigations.
Qualifications
  • (Master’s) Degree in electronics/electrical engineering, aerospace engineering or equivalent.
  • At least 3–5 years of professional experience.
  • Strong technical background in electronic equipment development: embedded electronics (microcontrollers, FPGAs, ASICs, etc.), mission computers, high‑speed digital interfaces, video or data processing systems, real‑time embedded architecture, etc.
  • Knowledge and practical expertise with airborne equipment: qualification and certification; hardware development/design and verification (e.g., DO‑254, ARP‑4754A, AMC 20‑152A, DO‑160, MIL‑STD‑810); software development (DO‑178) considered a plus.
  • Ability to technically assess supplier solutions and support problem-solving activities during development.
  • Experience in technical supplier management considered a plus.
  • Experience in requirements engineering and requirements management tools (DOORS) considered a plus.
  • Comfortable taking ownership and making technical decisions.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact with suppliers, customers and authorities in an international environment.
  • Team player and capable of working independently and collaboratively within an international multidisciplinary engineering environment.
  • Business‑fluent English; German is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel internationally to supplier facilities and customer sites when required.
