The Institute of Experimental Medicine (IEM) - Microbiome Platform – Anaerobic culturing branch

This position is within the group led by Pr. Mathilde Poyet (Institute of Experimental Medicine, Evolutionary Medicine Department) in close collaboration with Pr. Mathieu Groussin (Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology, Genetics & Bioinformatics Department) and Dr. Corinna Bang (Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology, Immunogenetics and Bioinformatics Department), at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein. We combine computational and experimental investigations to understand host-microbiome interactions. A flagship initiative of our group is the Global Microbiome Conservancy (GMbC), through which we built a worldwide cohort of human populations spanning diverse genetic backgrounds, diets, and lifestyles. This unique resource, together with clinical cohort data, enables us to address fundamental questions in microbiome ecology, host-microbe co-evolution, and the microbial contributions to chronic diseases.

Start in our team:

We are looking for professional and competent support in our lab to start 15th January 2026,limited until 14th January 2028 with the option of extension. Join this globally connected team of early-career researchers and contribute to a dynamic, creative, and supportive working environment

What we offer:

  • A full-time employment, currently 38.5 hours/week; a part-time employment may be possible within the framework of certain working time models

  • You will support the experimental services platform with running assays in continuous flow bioreactors
  • You will be responsible for culturing, isolation, characterization and biobanking of microbes
  • You will support and train students in the organization, technical preparation and experimental implementation of various microbiology, molecular biology and genetics research projects
  • You will be responsible for documentation and organization of experiments and data in databases
  • You will support us in the general laboratory organization, e.g. media preparation, waste management, ordering, equipment maintenance

Your profile:

  • Completed training as a medical-technical / biological-technical assistant with experience in molecular biology, genetics and /or microbiology (m/f/d) or a comparable degree with professional experience

We are particularly interested in recruiting a technician with skills that overlap with the following items:

  • Anaerobic and aerobic culturing of microbes and complex communities
  • Isolation of DNA from stool, swabs, tissues, and biopsy samples with gene analyses by PCR and qPCR
  • Creation of libraries for next-generation sequencing
  • Fluent in English and German, both written and spoken
