Develops and operates full‑stack quantum computers based on trapped‑ion technology. Our next‑generation machines combine laser‑cooled trapped ions with microwave control and tailored magnetic fields to solve problems beyond today’s reach.

FPGA Engineer (m/f/d) – Siegen

Design, develop and optimise FPGA‑based systems that form the foundation of our quantum control stack. Enable high‑performance signal generation and real‑time control for trapped‑ion quantum computers.

Responsibilities
  • Own design and delivery of FPGA‑based systems at the core of the quantum control stack.
  • Work closely with hardware engineers and experimental physicists to develop high‑performance microwave signal generation pipelines and real‑time feedback control.
  • Design, implement, validate and optimise FPGA systems in SystemVerilog, Verilog or VHDL.
  • Develop and maintain test benches and automation frameworks using Python (e.g. cocotb) and validate integration on target hardware.
  • Write production‑grade, well‑tested code and contribute to a culture of quality across the firmware stack.
  • Conduct formal verification, including timing analysis, code coverage and compliance with coding standards.
  • Define verification strategies and test plans in close collaboration with the team.
  • Develop and program test hardware to support automated execution of hardware test cases.
  • Participate actively in agile ceremonies – sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives.
Required Skills
  • 3+ years of hands‑on FPGA development experience.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electronics Engineering or a related field.
  • Solid RTL coding skills in SystemVerilog, Verilog or VHDL, including functional verification.
  • Experience writing and maintaining automated tests for production code.
  • Comfort working across disciplines alongside physicists, hardware engineers and software teams.
  • Strong learning agility and the ability to navigate an evolving technical environment.
  • Professional proficiency in English (written and spoken).
We value
  • Experience with RF signal generation and processing.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated build/test infrastructure.
  • Experience controlling high‑bandwidth (>1 GSPS) ADCs/DACs.
  • Familiarity with Xilinx SoC devices and related toolchains (Vivado, Vitis/SDK).
  • Proficiency with Git and version‑controlled development workflows.
  • Experience working in agile teams (Scrum or Kanban).
  • Exposure to quantum computing systems or research environments.
What you can expect from eleQtron
  • Competitive salary that reflects your achievements.
  • Flexible working hours with personal freedom.
  • Team spirit and regular events in an international, diverse environment.
  • Individualised further training and opportunities for personal development.
  • Wellness package, including health‑promoting benefits such as fitness programs.
  • Bike leasing program for mobility and sustainability.
  • Moving benefits – a welcome bonus for relocation.
  • Front‑line work at the intersection of academic research and commercial technology.
  • Modern workplace with high‑quality infrastructure, laboratories, offices and meeting rooms.
