Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced FPGA / PLD Engineer to support the development of industrial automation and embedded computer platforms on a 6-month contract.
The successful candidate will be responsible for FPGA architecture, development, verification, hardware integration and validation, working closely with hardware, embedded software, firmware and test engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop FPGA and programmable logic solutions for industrial PCs, PLCs and embedded computer platforms.
- Design, implement, verify and maintain robust FPGA architectures for long-lifecycle industrial products.
- Support the full FPGA development lifecycle, including:
- Requirements analysis
- RTL coding
- Simulation and verification
- Testing and hardware bring-up
- Documentation and product support
- Design and integrate hardware interfaces and bus-based communication systems, including PCI, PCIe and backplane communication.
- Work closely with hardware, embedded software, firmware, test, product management and manufacturing teams to define interfaces and resolve integration challenges.
- Participate in schematic reviews, component selection and FPGA pin assignment activities.
- Support designs involving PCIe, LVDS and other high-speed communication standards.
- Contribute to signal-integrity considerations and high-speed PCB design and routing.
- Support prototype bring-up, validation, testing, troubleshooting and debugging.
- Work with modern development tools, simulation environments, automated testing frameworks and version-control systems.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, tools and methodologies.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, Computer Science or a comparable technical discipline.
- Strong understanding of digital design principles, embedded systems and hardware interfaces.
- Experience with FPGA development using VHDL, Verilog and/or SystemVerilog.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working within cross-functional and international engineering teams.
- Experience with FPGA development environments such as:
- Intel Quartus
- Or comparable FPGA toolsets
- Experience integrating third-party IP blocks into FPGA designs.
- Knowledge of simulation, verification, scripting, automation and CI/CD.
- Experience with high-speed hardware interfaces and communication protocols.
- Practical laboratory experience with oscilloscopes, logic analysers and programmable power supplies.
- German language skills would be advantageous.
- Experience with modern development methodologies and engineering best practices.
