Jobbeschreibung
Your mission

As an Electrical Test Engineer, you will play a key role in the integration and validation of electronic systems that form the backbone of our neutral atom quantum computers. Working closely with our hardware, software, and physics teams, you will design, implement, and execute tests to ensure the reliability and performance of complex electronic subsystems. Your work will bridge multiple disciplines — from analog and RF electronics to embedded systems and automation — ensuring that our quantum hardware meets the highest standards of precision and stability.

Your responsibilities:

  • Design and execute test procedures for electronic subsystems and integrated hardware used in neutral atom quantum computers
  • Develop and maintain automated test setups and data acquisition systems using Python and embedded controllers (e.g., STM32, ARM)
  • Perform hands-on testing and debugging of analog, digital, and RF circuits to ensure system reliability and performance
  • Integrate and validate hardware modules, working closely with physicists, mechanical engineers, and software developers
  • Diagnose and resolve hardware issues using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and other laboratory instrumentation
  • Analyze test data, document findings, and propose design or process improvements
  • Maintain thorough documentation of test procedures, results, and hardware version compatibility
  • Support certification and compliance testing when needed
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of testing processes, methodologies, and tooling
  • Ensure seamless integration of new hardware revisions into the larger quantum computing system
Your profile

Necessary requirements

  • Solid general electronics knowledge; able to read schematics and PCB layouts
  • Proven lab debugging skills: oscilloscopes, DMMs, spectrum analyzers, soldering & rework
  • Python proficiency for instrument control, test automation, and data analysis
  • Experience building/operating test rigs with STM32/ARM-class microcontrollers
  • Hands-on system integration and hardware bring-up in a lab environment
  • Willingness to learn specialized stacks (e.g., ARTIQ, SYNC) and new tools quickly
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration with physics, mechanics, and software teams
  • Rigorous documentation & test reports practice, including version/compatibility control
  • Clear written and spoken English

Supplementary requirements

  • Deeper experience in one or more: analog electronics, low-noise power supplies, RF design/measurement
  • Exposure to testing standards and certification labs (EMC, safety, etc.)
  • Industrial background bringing production-minded, reliability-focused practices
  • Familiarity with data pipelines (e.g., NumPy/pandas) and CI for test automation
  • Basics of PCB debugging (e.g., rework under microscope, hot-air, flux-assisted repairs)
  • Experience with requirements traceability and hardware change control processes
Why us?

planqc, founded in 2022 by scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (MPQ) and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU), is a pioneering quantum computing startup based in Garching near Munich. We specialize in developing highly scalable neutral-atom quantum computers, utilizing individual atoms as qubits.

Here’s why you’ll love being part of our journey:

  • Cutting-Edge Innovation: At planqc, you’ll work with state-of-the-art technology, using individual atoms as qubits to build highly scalable quantum computers. Our unique approach combines precision from the world’s best atomic clocks, quantum gas microscopes, and high-speed Rydberg gates. Together, we’re creating the fastest path to industry-relevant quantum advantage.
  • Impactful Projects: Join us as we develop groundbreaking quantum systems and software, including a 1,000-qubit computer for the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ), a bespoke quantum computer for the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and quantum algorithms for several DLR projects.
  • Empowered by Excellence: With notable advisors and board members like Hermann Hauser (founder of ARM) and Professor Ann-Kristin Achleitner, we’re guided by exceptional leadership. Our Series A funding of €50 million allows us to push boundaries and explore new horizons.
  • Dynamic Work Culture: We value innovation, collaboration, and growth. Our team of around 50 brilliant minds works from locations in Garching, Ulm, and Innsbruck, fostering an environment where creativity meets ambition.
