Jobbeschreibung

Founded in 1607, Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) is a research university rich in tradition. Inspired by curiosity about the unknown, we enable around 25,000 students and 5,800 employees to advance science for society. Join us in breaking new ground and writing success stories - your own and those of our university.

Support us from 1. January 2026 in part-time (65 %) as a

Doctoral student (m/f/d) / Research Associate (m/f/d)
in the field of Redox Biology and Malaria Parasite Genetics

The position is part of an externally funded DFG project and is limited until 31.12.2028 at the Professorship of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Department of Nutritional Science at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Environmental Management, in collaboration with Prof. Marcel Deponte (University of Applied Sciences Kaiserslautern- Landau). The salary is in accordance with the collective labour agreement of the State of Hessen (E 13 TV-H).

Your tasks at a glance

Malaria, caused by Plasmodium species, continues to pose a significant threat to global health. Redox processes are essential for parasite survival and adaptation within the host environment. This project will use a reverse genetic approach to functionally characterize genes involved in redox regulation in Plasmodium falciparum. Techniques include CRISPR-Cas9-mediated genome editing, conditional gene expression systems, and various phenotypic and biochemical assays.

This collaborative project combines the molecular parasitology expertise of AG Przyborski with Dr. Deponte's long-standing work on redox biology, offering a unique interdisciplinary training environment.

Your qualifications and competences

  • We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate with:
  • Completed Master‘s or equivalent university degree (or equivalent) in molecular biology, biochemistry, parasitology, or a related life science field
  • Experience in genetic manipulation, molecular cloning, or cell culture (experience with Plasmodium is an asset but not required)
  • A strong interest in redox biology, parasite-host interactions, and functional genomics
  • Good communication skills and fluency in English (German is a plus, but not required)

Our offer to you

  • A PhD position as part of a DFG-funded collaborative research project
  • A stimulating and supportive scientific environment with access to cutting-edge technologies
  • Close mentorship and training in both malaria biology and redox biochemistry
  • Opportunities to attend international conferences and engage in interdisciplinary exchange
  • A varied job with flexible working hours
  • Free use of local public transport (LandesTicket Hessen)
  • More than 100 training seminars, workshops and e-learning opportunities per year for personal development, as well as a wide range of health and sports activities
  • Remuneration according to TV-H, company pension scheme, child allowance and special payments
  • Good compatibility of family and career (certificate "audit familiengerechte hochschule")
