Overview

AWS is set to introduce the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC). To spearhead this initiative, we are actively seeking experienced systems engineers with a strong background in automation and operations. As part of the AWS Managed Operations team, you will play a pivotal role in building and leading operations and development teams dedicated to delivering high-availability AWS services, including EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, and Bedrock, exclusively for EU customers. Responsibilities
  • Oversee the launch of the ESC in 2025, working closely with global AWS teams, and influence the evolution of AWS services and technology.
  • Collaborate with technology leaders to enhance day-to-day operations and improve availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of the ESC.
  • Occasionally participate in an on-call rotation to resolve incidents occurring out-of-hours.
  • Contribute to delivering scalable services and ensuring a high-availability experience for EU customers.
  • Build a best-in-class development engineering and operations team aligned with AWS commitment to customer satisfaction and continual innovation.
About AWS and the UC/ESC Context

Utility Computing (UC) – European Sovereign Cloud (ESC) is part of AWS UC. AWS UC provides innovations from foundational services such as Amazon S3 and EC2 to ongoing new product innovations that differentiate AWS. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, IoT, Platform, and Productivity Apps services. Within AWS UC, Managed Operations engineers engage with AWS customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Candidate must be a national of an EU member state and reside in the EU to operate the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
  • Amazon will provide relocation support for successful applicants relocating within the European Union.
  • Employees will participate in an on-call rota.
A day in the life

Embark on a week filled with meaningful contributions to the operation and improvement of significant software systems. You will review the operational health of services within your team’s responsibility, identify anomalies, and craft actionable bug reports to enhance efficiency and performance. You will provide constructive feedback on change management documents, address the operational backlog, and develop and test scripts to improve workflows. You will also share insights on the European Sovereign Cloud with service teams to foster knowledge sharing. This role includes 24x7 on-call responsibility; you will work as a team to root-cause issues and ensure systems remain resilient and fault-tolerant.

Basic Qualifications
  • This role requires you to be a national of an EU member state.
  • Demonstrated expertise in systems engineering working with hardware, software, networking, and operating systems.
  • Experience scripting processes in Bash, Python, or Ruby.
  • Solid understanding of Linux and networking, able to troubleshoot and anticipate performance, reliability, or availability issues.
  • Able to lead the creation, revision, and/or improvement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and drive operational best practices.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with monitoring frameworks (CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana, Elastic, or similar).
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and leading cross-organizational efforts requiring multiple team members.
  • Experience supporting services in AWS or other cloud systems.
  • Experience operating 24x7 high-availability, distributed software applications and tuning performance and fleet utilization.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or similar).
