As a Data Engineer, you will build the core data infrastructure that powers our machine learning systems for clinical diagnostics. You will ensure our digitized data library is high-quality, complete, and traceable, from the moment it is ingested through research, model development, and clinical validation. This high-impact role spans data engineering, data governance, and the data foundation of our ML platform in a regulated environment.
Responsibilities
- Multi-Modal Data Ingestion: Build and maintain robust pipelines to ingest and process large-scale, multi-modal datasets, including gigapixel imaging, genomic data, and clinical metadata.
- Data Transfer Infrastructure: Design reusable, secure transfer pipelines to streamline data exchange with clinical and scanning partners.
- Data Warehousing: Design, optimize, and own the data warehouse, providing R&D and clinical teams with fast, reliable access to critical data.
- Implement automated validation tools to enforce high data quality standards at scale, expanding on sample quality control provided by our Clinical Team.
- Build data versioning and end-to-end lineage tracking so every data point is traceable to its source and fully auditable for model research, development, or clinical validation.
- Shape and execute data governance practices (access control, retention, usage) that align with FDA and IVDR compliance requirements.
Cross-functional collaboration
- ML Platform Support: Work closely with ML Engineers and Software Engineers to design and strengthen the underlying data foundation of our ML platform.
Requirements
- 3+ years of hands-on experience:
- Building scalable pipelines for large-scale structured and unstructured data, using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC).
- Building solutions for distributed or high-performance data processing with reproducible, version-controlled infrastructure.
- Experience with data modeling, data versioning, lineage tracking, and automated quality controls in production environments.
- 2+ years experience developing data or ML systems, preferably in a regulated environment (e.g. medical devices, healthcare, financial services) with a strong understanding of requirements such as reproducibility, auditability, and data governance.
- 1+ year of experience working with large image formats (e.g., Whole Slide Images [WSI], DICOM, or equivalent).
- Excellent written & verbal communication (English) and interpersonal skills.
- Valid work permit and residence in Germany or other Central European country.
- Availability to travel to clinical partners in Europe and to our offices in Basel and Tunis as needed.
- Exposure to ISO 27001 / ISO 13485 a plus
- Exposure to Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) or clinical integrations is a strong plus
