JOB INFORMATION

The Community Nurse provides nursing and basic medical services within IRC’s integrated humanitarian health program for conflict-affected populations and other vulnerable groups. The position involves working as part of a multidisciplinary mobile team together with a psychiatrist and psychologist. The nurse conducts a basic health assessment of clients, provides nursing care, monitors vital signs, dispenses medications prescribed by the physician, and provides self‑care recommendations. In cooperation with the psychiatrist and psychologist, the nurse participates in assessing clients’ needs and vulnerabilities, conducting home visits, managing patients, and, when necessary, referring them to appropriate services. The position is based in Mykolaiv, with frequent field travel to communities in Kherson oblast.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide nursing care to clients with moderate and severe mental health conditions in the community or at home.
  • Conduct basic medical assessments (blood pressure, blood glucose, oxygen saturation, ECG, etc.) and record results in accordance with IRC protocols.
  • Provide clients with self‑care recommendations.
  • Dispense medications prescribed by the physician and explain to the patient how to use them according to the prescription.
  • Work closely with the psychologist to support the physical and mental health and wellbeing of the most vulnerable clients through daily home visits.
  • Assess clients’ specific vulnerabilities with the support of the Health Department and develop individualized case management strategies accordingly.
  • Maintain complete medical records for all patients served by Health Department staff.
  • Contribute to the development of schedules, routes, and supplies for the Health Department.
  • Work closely with the physician to ensure the proper use, ordering, and replenishment of medications and medical supplies for the Health Department.
  • Monitor and report on public health conditions in the community, provide consultations, and develop strategies to improve sanitary and epidemiological conditions.
  • Participate in information management and data collection for the Health Department.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of strategies to improve access, quality standards, efficiency, and participation based on statistical results, assessments, surveys, and client feedback.
  • Collaborate with IRC’s partner organizations to provide nursing consultations and healthcare services to clients referred through established referral pathways.
  • Maintain and submit all required reporting documentation accurately and in a timely manner, in accordance with established requirements, procedures, and deadlines.
  • Participate in official business trips, field visits, and emergency response activities in accordance with program needs and IRC operational requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education: Professional pre-higher or higher education in Nursing or another healthcare-related field.

Work Experience: Minimum 3 years of professional nursing experience in clinical or outpatient settings, with substantial experience in palliative and home care. Experience working with psychiatric patients is an advantage. Previous experience working in health programs and with NGOs is an advantage.

Required Skills and Competencies

Ability to work in a team, flexibility, ability to cope with stressful situations, and ability to work with limited resources. IT skills, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, are required for tasks such as data collection, updating maps, and preparing detailed weekly reports on information and awareness-raising activities. Fluency in Ukrainian; basic knowledge of English is an advantage. Proficiency in computer programs, particularly Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, as well as skills in data collection, documentation, and preparation of detailed weekly activity reports.

Reporting and Coordination Structure

Reports to: Nurse Supervisor Direct reports: None. Internal and external coordination: Health Department staff and staff from other IRC departments, representatives of health facilities, local authorities, partner organizations, protection actors, and other stakeholders working in the project implementation area.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION
  • This position is field-based, requiring frequent travel to project locations based on security situation. Office work for documentation, administration, and other project needs is expected approximately one day a week.
  • Occasional weekend work may be required.
