Jobbeschreibung

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose of the Position

The Emergency Medicine Specialist ensures timely and appropriate care for patients presenting with medical, surgical and trauma-related emergencies in resource-limited and often challenging environments. The role combines direct clinical care, clinical leadership and capacity building, with a strong focus on improving the quality of emergency care and strengthening local emergency care systems.

As the clinical lead for the Emergency Department (ED), the Emergency Medicine Specialist supervises and mentors healthcare staff, supports the development of emergency care practices and ensures preparedness for mass casualty incidents, working in close collaboration with hospital teams, local health authorities and other relevant stakeholders.

Main Duties & Responsibilities
  • Lead the daily clinical operations of the Emergency Department (ED) and ensure the delivery of high-quality emergency care.
  • Provide hands-on clinical care, including triage, resuscitation, trauma management and coordination of patient referrals and follow-up.
  • Supervise, mentor and support physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals working in the ED.
  • Develop and deliver training in emergency medicine, trauma care, Basic Emergency Care (BEC), infection prevention and control, and mass casualty management.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of SOPs, treatment guidelines, clinical pathways and quality indicators.
  • Lead ED preparedness and response to mass casualty incidents, including contingency planning, staff training and simulation exercises.
  • Monitor emergency care activities, analyse medical data and contribute to reporting and continuous quality improvement.
  • Collaborate with hospital management, local health authorities and other stakeholders to strengthen emergency care systems and promote the safety of patients and healthcare staff.
Relationships
  • Internally: Works closely with Emergency Department physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals, hospital clinical departments and management, and maintains regular contact with the Chief Emergency Medicine Specialist at ICRC headquarters.
  • Externally: Liaises with local health authorities, hospital counterparts and other relevant stakeholders involved in strengthening emergency care systems.
Education & Experience Required
  • Medical degree with a recognized specialization in Emergency Medicine, completed through examination.
  • Current and up-to-date specialist registration in Emergency Medicine.
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), or equivalent, certification; instructor status is preferred.
  • Minimum three years of post-specialization clinical experience in Emergency Medicine, including trauma management.
  • Proven ability to teach and train healthcare professionals in emergency care, trauma care and mass casualty management.
  • Proficiency in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), including the ability to teach its use.
  • Familiarity with protocols and guidelines applicable to low-resource settings.
  • Candidates must remain up to date with annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) or Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements, with a minimum of 50 points per year.
  • Experience in austere environments, conflict-affected settings or humanitarian organizations is highly desirable.
  • Additional certifications in Basic Emergency Care (BEC), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) are highly desirable.
  • Training in mass casualty management, such as EMERGO, MCIT or HMIMMS, is an advantage.
Desired Profile & Skills
  • Strong leadership, organizational and team-management skills.
  • Excellent clinical decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven ability to remain flexible, resilient and professional in challenging and stressful environments.
  • Creativity and innovation when working in resource-limited settings.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Cultural sensitivity and the ability to work effectively in multicultural and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong commitment to humanitarian principles and patient-centred care.
  • Empathy, compassion and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Strong advocacy skills, particularly regarding the safety and security of healthcare workers and patients.
  • Good IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint, as well as report writing.
Languages
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is essential (minimum C1).
