We are seeking a Co-Director or Dramaturg to contribute to the artistic development of a Berlin-based contemporary music theatre project. The role is open and can be shaped around the candidate’s experience, spanning co-direction on language and development of scenes or dramaturgy focused on narrative and structure.

The candidate will collaborate across disciplines, bringing ideas into the creative process, with development and rehearsals mainly in Berlin.

Co-Director / Dramaturg - Berlin-Based Contemporary Music Theatre Project

We are looking for a Co-Director or Dramaturg to join a contemporary music theatre project currently being developed in Berlin.

About the Project

The project is inspired by a Korean classical novel and brings its story into present-day Berlin.

The world of the original story intersects with the lives of people in Berlin today, exploring questions of belonging and exclusion, the individual and the community, and the relationship between one person and many.

The production is being developed as an interdisciplinary music theatre work combining acting, live music and vocals with movement, analogue shadow theatre and media.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for a Co-Director or Dramaturg to contribute to the artistic development, dramaturgy and text development of the work.

The exact role is open and can be shaped according to the person’s experience and way of working. This could involve working as a co-director on the overall theatrical language and development of scenes, or as a dramaturg with a stronger focus on narrative, text and structure.

We are particularly interested in someone with:

• Professional experience in theatre, music theatre or contemporary performance
• An interest in developing new work and being part of a creative process
• Experience or a strong interest in developing text and narrative structure
• An interest in work that brings together music, movement, performance and visual elements
• Experience working collaboratively with artists from different disciplines
• A willingness to bring their own perspective and ideas into the development of the work

Previous experience with Korean culture or traditional Korean arts is not required. Different cultural and artistic perspectives are very welcome and are an important part of the collaborative process.

Working Process

The basic concept, artistic direction, music and key scenes of the project are already in development. The next stage will focus on developing the text and dramatic structure further and bringing the different artistic elements together into a coherent performance language.

We are looking for someone who is interested in contributing to the creative process rather than simply working with a finished production. We would like to exchange ideas, ask questions together, and develop the structure and theatrical language of the work collaboratively.

The exact role and scope of the collaboration can be discussed based on the project’s needs and our respective ways of working.

Schedule & Location

• Location: Berlin
• Planned performance period: Late 2027 or 2028
• Current stage: Project development and funding preparation
• Development & rehearsals: Mainly in Berlin
• Fee: Paid project. The specific scope of work, fee and contract conditions will be discussed once funding and the production schedule are confirmed.
