About the Role

Hygi.de is seeking a Senior Backend Developer specializing in PHP and Symfony to help evolve the backend of a high-volume e-commerce platform. You will work in a backend team alongside three other developers and collaborate closely with the Shop Team Lead. In this senior role, you will contribute beyond feature delivery by helping shape architecture, technical standards, and code quality.

The role also brings together software engineering, artificial intelligence, and business impact. You will use AI tools thoughtfully in the development process, evaluate potential AI applications for the online shop, and help turn promising ideas into reliable, commercially valuable solutions. This is an opportunity to influence how the company builds software while supporting a platform with millions of customers and a broad product catalog.

Qualifications

• You bring at least five years of backend development experience with modern PHP and Symfony, along with strong knowledge of software architecture. Relevant approaches may include domain-driven design, modular monoliths, microservices, or event-driven architecture. You have advanced knowledge of MySQL, performance optimization, caching, and queueing, and practical experience using AI coding assistants or coding agents.
• You can assess technical options not only for quality and elegance, but also for their business value. Very good German and good English skills are required. Experience with LLM APIs, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, vector databases, agentic workflows, e-commerce platforms, or integrations with ERP, payment, and logistics systems is an advantage. Mentoring or supporting the technical development of other engineers is also welcome.

Responsibilities

• Develop and improve the backend architecture using PHP 8.x and Symfony, making informed decisions that support scalability, maintainability, and performance. Design and deliver sophisticated e-commerce capabilities across areas such as checkout, pricing, product assortment, search, and fulfillment. Promote high standards of code quality through clean code practices, automated testing, code reviews, and CI/CD.
• Use AI coding assistants and agents, such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot, to support development, refactoring, testing, and documentation. Help establish effective AI-supported workflows and critically review AI-generated code. Identify practical AI opportunities for the shop, including intelligent search, product data enrichment, recommendations, and process automation. Translate business objectives into technical solutions while considering metrics such as conversion, average order value, margin, and process costs. Partner with Product Owners, developers, and other departments, and share your expertise with the team.
• The technology environment includes PHP 8.x, Symfony, MySQL, Redis, RabbitMQ, Git, CI/CD, on-premise hosting, Jira, and Confluence.
