Airbus Defence and Space GmbH in Ulm is seeking a Senior Generative AI/Agentic AI Engineer to design, develop, and test AI services, including chatbots and autonomous agents. The role blends development with on-prem infrastructure, security, and internal tooling, with occasional travel and possible reduced weekly hours.

You will join an international GenAI team working to advance the company’s artificial intelligence roadmap and build secure, sovereign solutions for software development.

About the Role

As a Senior Generative AI/Agentic AI Engineer, you will design, develop, and test modern AI services, including chatbots and autonomous agents. You will help shape a service portfolio that enables internal teams to use generative AI effectively in software engineering while meeting stringent security and compliance requirements. The role combines hands-on development with infrastructure operations, technical support, and contributions to the team’s technology roadmap. This is a permanent, professional-level opportunity based in Ulm. Reduced weekly working hours may be possible, with responsibilities adjusted accordingly. Occasional business travel is expected.

Qualifications

You have a degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, or a comparable qualification, together with at least 10 years of professional experience, including three to four years or more in AI projects. You bring strong Python programming skills and demonstrable experience building LLM applications, chatbots, and AI agents. Your background includes inference frameworks such as vLLM or SGLang, vector databases such as Qdrant or Chroma, and agent development tools such as Claude Code or OpenCode.

You have practical experience deploying, scaling, and monitoring Docker and Kubernetes workloads in on-premise environments, along with an understanding of container networking. You use Git confidently, including branching strategies and code reviews, and communicate fluently in German and English, both verbally and in writing. Experience with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), Model Context Protocol (MCP), CI/CD, logging and monitoring, AI cybersecurity, and LLM evaluation frameworks is an advantage. You approach technical challenges systematically and can explain complex topics clearly to internal users.

Responsibilities

Design, code, orchestrate, and test scalable generative AI services, chatbots, and autonomous agents using modern frameworks. Deploy and maintain LLM infrastructure in secure on-premise environments, using Docker and Kubernetes to support performance optimization, reliable scaling, and effective resource management. Develop and improve RAG pipelines that connect AI applications to internal knowledge sources, and implement MCP tools that enable standardized, secure interfaces.

Help ensure that services comply with Airbus Defence and Space security, safety, and compliance policies. Provide technical support to internal users, investigate incidents, troubleshoot issues, and create clear technical documentation and reusable best practices. Contribute to the technical roadmap by assessing emerging technologies and building proof-of-concept solutions for new AI use cases. Collaborate with colleagues across the international GenAI team to deliver dependable services that meet user needs.
