Job Description
We are currently seeking a Substation Engineer to support the execution and development of electric utility infrastructure projects across the United States while being based in our Bogotá, Colombia office. This role will focus on the design and implementation of substation protection and control systems, supporting projects ranging from distribution through transmission voltage levels.
Responsibilities
- Develop electric substation design drawings, including single-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, relay panel layouts, and control building layouts
- Prepare and review protection and control design packages for utility substation projects
- Perform engineering calculations and analyses, including battery sizing, AC station service sizing, voltage drop calculations, and conduit fill calculations
- Apply and implement relay protection schemes for transmission and distribution substations
- Develop technical equipment specifications, construction specifications, and engineering work scopes
- Support SCADA integration efforts through coordination with engineering and client teams
- Review substation designs and engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, quality, and compliance with project requirements
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, including physical design, civil, structural, telecommunications, and project management personnel
- Ensure designs comply with applicable U.S. utility standards, client requirements, and industry codes
- Support construction activities, field investigations, and engineering issue resolution during project execution
- Collaborate with U.S.-based engineering teams to deliver projects on schedule and within quality expectations
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, standards development, and engineering best practices
Education and Experience
- 5+ years of experience in substation engineering, with a primary focus on protection and control projects
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
- Experience developing protection and control drawings and construction deliverables for utility substations
- Familiarity with relay protection schemes, relay logic development, and protection philosophies
- Basic understanding of SCADA systems and substation communications
- Experience performing electrical engineering calculations related to substation design
- Proficiency with MicroStation and AutoCAD
- Strong familiarity with NESC, IEEE, and other applicable utility industry codes and standards
- Experience supporting U.S.-based utility or consulting engineering projects preferred
- English proficiency at B2 level or higher (required to support U.S.-based teams and clients)
- Strong communication and collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary engineering environment
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and project deadlines in a fast-paced consulting environment
- Demonstrated commitment to technical excellence and continuous professional development
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting transmission substation projects up to and including 500kV
- Experience with modern digital relays and substation automation systems
- Familiarity with utility protection standards and relay coordination practices
- Experience working in an engineering consulting or EPC environment
- Knowledge of IEC 61850 and substation communication protocols is a plus
