Job summary

Backblaze is seeking a senior backend engineer to strengthen its data infrastructure platform powering B2 Object Storage and backup services. You will improve automation, observability, and stability, drive architectural changes for long-term scalability, and increase throughput across thousands of servers.

You will design and implement automation frameworks, extend the observability stack, and partner with on-call teams to reduce toil while delivering robust, scalable software across the fleet.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of backend development in an enterprise environment.
• Experience designing automation frameworks or platforms that other engineers build on.
• Experience building large-scale software systems on thousands of servers.
• Experience building automation or tooling that other engineers depend on daily.
• Working knowledge of observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, ELK, Datadog).
• Strong Linux fundamentals and comfort with bare-metal or hybrid environments.
• Experience with AI-assisted development tools (Gemini, Cursor, Claude Code).
• Familiar with SDLC and end-to-end delivery from design to rollout.
• Shows curiosity and analytical thinking when solving problems.
• Excellent remote communication and proactive teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Design and build automation frameworks enabling engineers to provision, configure, and repair fleet infrastructure.
• Extend the observability stack with metrics, logs, traces, and alerts to monitor health and degradation.
• Create reporting dashboards and visualizations for fleet health, capacity, and trends.
• Develop system health tooling to detect hardware issues and configuration drift before incidents.
• Lead technical design discussions and write clear design documents for cross-service changes.
• Drive large feature implementations from design through rollout and backfill where needed.
• Collaborate with on-call rotation to automate toil and improve signal quality.
