WSP is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer – Hydro & Dams to join our multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the planning, analysis, design, and assessment of geotechnical aspects related to hydroelectric, dam, water resources, and major infrastructure projects. This role involves supporting projects through all phases, including site investigations, feasibility studies, detailed engineering, construction support, dam safety assessments, and rehabilitation programs.

The ideal candidate will have 6 to 9 years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering, with significant exposure to hydroelectric, dam, mining, water resources, or large civil infrastructure projects. Due to the global nature of the projects and stakeholders, advanced English and French language proficiency is required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and support geotechnical investigations, site characterizations, and interpretation of subsurface conditions.
  • Perform geotechnical analyses related to foundations, embankments, slopes, retaining structures, tunnels, underground works, and water‑retaining structures.
  • Develop geotechnical designs and recommendations for dams, hydroelectric facilities, spillways, intake structures, powerhouses, and related infrastructure.
  • Conduct slope stability, seepage, settlement, bearing capacity, and deformation analyses using industry‑standard methodologies and software.
  • Prepare technical reports, engineering calculations, design specifications, and contract documentation.
  • Review and interpret geotechnical investigation data, geological information, and laboratory testing results.
  • Support dam safety assessments, risk evaluations, and rehabilitation projects.
  • Develop geotechnical models and numerical analyses for complex engineering projects.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including civil, structural, hydrotechnical, electrical, environmental, and geological specialists.
  • Provide technical support during construction, including field inspections, construction monitoring, contractor submittal reviews, and resolution of geotechnical issues.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable engineering standards, regulations, dam safety guidelines, and industry’s best practices.
  • Support project planning, budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, and technical proposal preparation.
  • Maintain effective communication with clients, project teams, contractors, and stakeholders in both English and French.
Qualifications and Experience
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Master's Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Engineering Geology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng. or equivalent) designation, or eligibility to obtain professional registration, is preferred.
Experience
  • 6 to 9 years of professional experience in geotechnical engineering.
  • Experience supporting hydroelectric, dam, water resources, mining, or major infrastructure projects.
  • Experience with geotechnical investigations, engineering analysis, foundation design, and technical reporting.
  • Experience involving dam engineering, embankments, water‑retaining structures, and dam safety programs is highly desirable.
  • Experience supporting projects through feasibility, detailed design, construction, and operational phases.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams and international project environments.
Technical Skills
  • Strong knowledge of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, foundation engineering, seepage analysis, and slope stability assessment.
  • Experience with geotechnical software such as GeoStudio, PLAXIS, Rocscience Suite, FLAC, RS2, Slide, Settle3, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with international dam safety regulations, guidelines, and geotechnical engineering standards.
  • Ability to interpret geological and geotechnical investigation data and develop engineering recommendations.
  • Experience with numerical modeling and advanced geotechnical analysis techniques.
  • Knowledge of risk‑based assessment methodologies for dams and hydraulic structures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and engineering documentation tools.
  • Strong technical writing and reporting capabilities.
Language Requirements
  • Advanced English proficiency (written and verbal) – Mandatory.
  • Advanced French proficiency (written and verbal) – Mandatory.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in multicultural and international project environments.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports, engineering studies, presentations, and client communications in both English and French.
