Organizational context:

This position is within the Engineering Unit of the Service Delivery Section, Mission Support Division, of the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia (UNVMC) in Bogota. The role supports the design, maintenance, repair, and liquidation of structures, facilities, and systems essential for peacekeeping operations. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Engineering Unit.

Job purpose:

The Associate Electrical/Civil Engineer applies fundamental engineering theories and techniques to support the design, maintenance, repair, and liquidation of structures, facilities, and systems for peacekeeping missions. This involves performing calculations, creating designs using software like AutoCAD, drafting detailed designs, and preparing technical reports. The role also includes evaluating bidder proposals, assisting with surveying and site selection, managing project planning, and overseeing procurement of engineering supplies. A key aspect is ensuring adherence to UNVMC policies, ethical conduct, and integrating a gender-sensitive approach in all duties, contributing to the efficient operation of mission infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

The Associate Electrical/Civil Engineer is responsible for applying engineering principles to construction and facilities management projects. Duties include performing calculations, producing AutoCAD drawings, and supporting engineering design coordination. The role involves recording test data, assisting in project planning and integrated design development, and drafting detailed designs. Responsibilities extend to preparing reports and briefs, evaluating bidder proposals, and conducting site surveys for construction projects. Additionally, the engineer will manage asset and budget processes, plan and manage engineering projects, prepare procurement requisitions, and liaise with contractors. Ensuring compliance with UNVMC policies, ethical standards, and gender sensitivity is also a core function.

Education:

An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in electrical or civil engineering, or a related field, is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted.

Work experience:

A minimum of two years of progressive experience in electrical or civil engineering is required. Desirable experience includes using computer design software (e.g., AutoCAD), facilities management for large buildings, asset management (UMOJA), and computer scheduling software (e.g., MS Project). Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is mandatory.

Skills:

Proficiency in electrical/civil engineering principles and project support. Competence in computer-aided design (AutoCAD) and MS Office Suite. Skills in planning, organizing, and managing engineering projects. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively.
