CERN is seeking a Systems and Digital ASIC Engineer to bridge architecture‑level simulation and hardware implementation for next‑generation particle detectors. You will develop and validate electronic systems and digital ICs based on system specifications.

The role involves modelling, verification, collaboration with engineers and physicists, and team supervision. Hybrid work, 40 hours/week, 24‑month contract with possible extension.

Qualifikationen

  • Master's degree with 2–6 years post‑graduation experience.
  • PhD with no more than 3 years post‑graduation experience.
  • Experience in digital ASIC design and system‑level modelling is desirable.

Join CERN's IC Technology R&D team and contribute to the development of advanced electronics for future particle detectors. We are seeking an engineer with expertise in system-level modelling and digital ASIC design to work at the interface between architecture-level simulation and hardware implementation. In this role, you will help develop and validate innovative electronic systems, bridging high-level design exploration with hands‑on digital hardware development.

Your responsibilities

  • Develop and use simulation models to study and optimise electronic systems for future particle detectors.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of digital integrated circuits based on system-level specifications.
  • Support the verification and validation of electronic designs through simulation and testing.
  • Collaborate with engineers, physicists and software developers on the development of advanced detector electronics.
  • Help improve the performance, efficiency and reliability of electronic systems.
  • Document designs, results and technical developments, and share knowledge within the team.
  • This role includes team supervision responsibilities.

Your profile

  • Knowledge of digital electronics and digital design gained through academic, research or personal projects.
  • Familiarity with hardware description languages such as VHDL, Verilog or SystemVerilog.
  • Understanding of system-level modelling, simulation and verification techniques.
  • Interest in integrated circuit design and advanced electronics for scientific applications.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary and collaborative environments.

Skills

  • Good programming skills in C++ and familiarity with Python.
  • Knowledge of digital design concepts and hardware description languages such as VHDL, Verilog or SystemVerilog.
  • Familiarity with simulation, modelling and software development tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
  • You have a professional background in Electronics (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post‑graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post‑graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week
