(Senior) Underwriter Aviation - Reinsurance

Zurich, Switzerland

We are looking for an Aviation Reinsurance Underwriter, possibly Senior Underwriter. You will work as part of of the Aviation Reinsurance Underwriting Team, and in accordance with established procedures and guidelines, administrate and service new and renewal business.

You will have an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand underwriting experience, receive valuable on-the-job training and if necessary complete a relevant, professional insurance qualification to develop and enhance your knowledge of the insurance and reinsurance industry.

You will report to the Head of Aviation.

What you’ll be doing

What will your essential responsibilities include?

  • Underwrite a portfolio of proportional and non-proportional business following the business plan and underwriting guidelines including review of underwriting submissions; full use of underwriting tools including both non-proportional and proportional pricing models; wording review; accounting systems; and aggregate exposure tracking
  • Develop new and existing business by planning and carrying out a marketing travel schedule for regular client and broker visits; attend industry events
  • Review client and exposure data, provide and structure the necessary information for peer reviews and committee referrals in order to support the underwriting process
  • Prepare and lead Underwriting Committee presentations
  • Support implementation of business development activities and ad hoc project work including, but not limited to: portfolio optimization, identification of key brokers and markets, action plans from marketing activities
  • Participate and contribute to business planning, development and improvements of tools and processes
  • With authority of the Aviation team, you will manage day to day tasks and all parts of underwriting process, including oversight and liaison with Operations, Claims, Actuarial and Finance functions
  • Work alongside actuaries to develop your technical skills, improve your ability to price risks and understand how exposures are measured at portfolio level

  • Experience with Aviation Reinsurance Underwriting
  • Creative problem-solver and analytical thinker who can demonstrate adaptability and accuracy, along with sharp numerical and logical skills and an ability to make decisions independently, using own judgment
  • Strong organizing skills, including effective scheduling, prioritization and time management skills. Able to complete tasks to tight deadlines. Demonstration of a ‘can do’ attitude, even under demanding circumstances
  • Ability to perform in a pressurized environment and adjusting comfortably to changing conditions and priorities, especially during the busy renewal season
  • Comfortable taking ownership for work, identifying the need for action whilst working effectively within a team
  • A natural business developer who enjoys being out in the market with developed influencing and negotiation skills.

Desired Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to work in a matrix environment that encompasses both local and virtual teams
  • Willingness to travel
  • Fluency in English, any additional European language is of advantage
  • Excellent working knowledge of Excel and other Microsoft Office programs
