Proton is seeking a senior backend engineer to advance our Foundation team's backend framework. You will work in PHP for API work and Rust where performance and memory safety matter, contributing end-to-end from design to documentation.

You will shape module boundaries in a large monorepo, collaborate with product teams, and drive library adoption while improving build times and developer experience. Based in Switzerland, with offices in Geneva and beyond.

Qualifikationen

• 5+ years backend development in production environments, with PHP focus.
• Familiarity with Rust or ability to learn quickly, understanding ownership and lifetimes.
• Strong opinions on API design: naming, defaults, error handling, and library vs service boundaries.

Aufgaben

• Design and build shared libraries, framework layers, and internal services used across Proton products.
• Turn recurring patterns into robust abstractions and write useful documentation.
• Improve build times, local dev setup, and test ergonomics to boost developer experience.
• Collaborate with product teams through RFCs and design reviews, and contribute pull requests.
• Help ensure code bases stay navigable in a large monorepo by defining boundaries and ownership.
• Drive adoption of internal libraries and guide migration paths between architectures or languages.
