Research Scientist in Sensing (80 - 100%)

Your role and responsibilities

As a Research Scientist, you will be working on sensing solutions for ABB’s next generation systems and products. We are looking for a team member with a proven research track record and the eagerness to transfer and apply world-class academic research into an industrial environment. You will work within the highly motivated, international team of scientists at ABB Research. We offer an open and innovative work environment with many diverse opportunities to grow your career.

The work model for the role is: hybrid.

You will be mainly accountable for:

  1. Contributing to -and leading- research projects in industrial sensing addressing the needs of our businesses, with applications including process automation, process industries, port automation, or maritime transport.
  2. Together with multidisciplinary project teams, developing novel, high-value sensing products and solutions from the concept definition phase to the experimental verification.
  3. Evaluating new technologies and conducting technical surveys, generating project proposals with business impact.
  4. Disseminating your results with scientific publications and internal technical reports, generating intellectual property.
  5. Collaborating with researchers and engineers from other research centres, ABB business units, as well as from universities.
Qualifications for the role
  • PhD in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering or in a related field. Strong background in machine perception and computer vision.
  • Expertise in any of the following fields is an advantage: machine learning, reinforcement learning, sensor fusion, digital signal processing, time series analysis.
  • Proficient in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C/C++) and familiarity with the Linux ecosystem.
  • Hands-on experience with sensing hardware and software pipelines for cameras, LIDAR, or radar is a plus.
  • Proven publication track record at top scientific conferences and journals.
  • Team player attitude. Willingness to learn new industrial applications and work on a broad range of technologies.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English.
