ETH Zurich invites applications for a doctoral student position in the Professorship of Solid Mechanics (SMEC) at the Institute for Building Materials. The project investigates how local contact interactions in architected materials shape macroscopic interface response using physics-based numerical modelling, theory, and multiscale concepts.

You will build computational models, connect cell-scale mechanics to large-scale descriptions, and contribute to a collaborative, interdisciplinary research

Qualifikationen

• MSc in mechanics, physics, civil/mechanical/aerospace engineering, material science, computational science or related field.
• Background in mechanics, applied physics, computational mechanics, or related areas.
• Experience implementing scientific code and validating results against reference data.
• Proficiency in Python and use of version control.

Aufgaben

• Conduct computational and theoretical investigation of how local contact interactions determine macroscopic interface response.
• Connect cell-scale mechanics with multiscale/rough-surface contact mechanics for effective descriptions.
• Develop and use numerical lattice models to study contact behaviour of architected materials.
• Analyze how architecture, material properties, and length scales affect contact area, pressure, interface stiffness, and load transmission.
• Seek statistical or homogenised descriptions linking single-cell mechanics to macroscopic interfaces.
