Job summary

B-Hive Switzerland is seeking a Research Scientist to join a major chemistry-focused project in Basel. You will propagate, curate and characterize bacterial and fungal strains, execute molecular biology workflows, and maintain lab infrastructure within a biosafety-conscious setting.

You will work with electronic lab notebooks, plan tasks independently and report scientific data accurately, contributing to high-impact projects in life sciences and related industries.

Qualifications

• BSc in microbiology, molecular biology, biotechnology, or related field, or a lab tech apprenticeship with microbiology exposure.
• Proven experience culturing, isolating and archiving bacteria and fungi under aseptic conditions.
• Hands-on biosafety experience with biosafety cabinets and containment protocols.
• Familiarity with DNA prep, PCR, gel electrophoresis for strain verification.
• Knowledge of routine lab maintenance, media prep, autoclave sterilization, and inventory management.
• Experience in agriculture or crop protection research is a plus.
• Proficiency with electronic lab notebooks.
• Strong ability to plan tasks, analyze and report scientific data accurately.

Responsibilities

• Propagate, preserve and curate bacterial and fungal strains within the microbial collection.
• Cultivate microorganisms under a variety of experimental conditions.
• Support strain characterization through molecular biology analyses including DNA extraction and PCR.
• Plan, perform and document laboratory workflows independently in electronic lab notebooks.
• Maintain and develop the collection of bacterial and fungal isolates.
• Support daily laboratory operations including equipment maintenance and inventory management.
• Maintain the general laboratory infrastructure.
