Job summary

Adecco Basel is seeking a Research Scientist in Biology for a 1-year temp assignment. The role focuses on maintaining a microbial strain collection and performing molecular biology workflows in a Biosafety level-1/2 environment.

You will culture bacteria and fungi, document workflows in electronic lab notebooks, and support general lab operations including equipment maintenance and inventory management. Strong aseptic technique and independent planning are essential.

Qualifications

• Culturing, isolating and archiving bacteria and fungi with aseptic technique.
• BSL-1/BSL-2 experience and use of biosafety cabinets.
• DNA extraction, PCR and gel electrophoresis for strain verification.
• Independent planning of daily experimental protocols and data reporting.
• Autoclaving, media preparation and stock management.

Job description

For an international company in the global agribusiness market in Basel we are looking for a Research Scientist Biology - temp. assignment, min 1 year (100%).

Responsibilities

Our client is pioneering solutions that safeguard global food security while championing sustainable agriculture. Within Biologicals Research, the Natural Products and Biomolecular Chemistry group based in Basel-St. Johann is developing microbial-derived concepts to promote crop health and contribute to the evolution of agricultural practices.

As a Research Scientist, you will play a central role in maintaining and expanding our microbial strain collection, encompassing diverse bacterial and fungal isolates. Your primary duties will include propagating, preserving, and curating strains, as well as culturing microorganisms under a variety of experimental conditions. You will support strain characterization by carrying out routine molecular biology assays, including DNA extraction and PCR analysis. In this role, you will be expected to independently plan, execute, and document laboratory workflows in electronic lab notebooks. Additionally, you will support overall laboratory operations by contributing to equipment maintenance, consumable inventory management, and general lab infrastructure upkeep.

Profile

• Microbiological Proficiency : Proven experience in culturing, isolating, and archiving both bacteria and fungi using strict aseptic techniques.
  • Biosafety & Containment: Hands-on experience working in BSL-1 and BSL-2 environments, with demonstrated expertise operating within biological safety cabinets (BSCs) and adhering to containment protocols.
  • Molecular Biology Techniques : Practical familiarity with standard molecular biology workflows, specifically genomic DNA preparation, PCR amplification, and gel electrophoresis for strain verification.
  • Work Organization : Strong ability to independently schedule tasks, plan daily experimental protocols, and accurately analyze and report scientific data.
  • Laboratory Management : Familiarity with routine laboratory maintenance, media preparation, sterilization standards (autoclaving), and stock management.
  • Education :

  BSc in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or a related field OR completed Lab Technician apprenticeship with significant exposure to microbiology and molecular biology methods.
