Jobbeschreibung

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you motivated by precision mechanics and interested in contributing to innovative magnet technology for particle accelerators? Join us in building the next generation of superconducting magnets at CERN.

The Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats (MSC) group in the Technology Department (TE) is responsible for the design, construction, and testing of both superconducting and normal conducting magnets for CERN’s accelerator complex. This includes magnet cryostat design, integration into accelerator systems, and quality control, and operational support for magnet performance and devices.

Within MSC, the Superconducting Magnet Technology (SMT) section is responsible for advancing high-field magnet technologies for future accelerators. These advanced systems use superconducting materials with complex mechanical and electrical properties, with complex mechanical and electrical properties, presenting significant manufacturing challenges. Addressing these challenges requires the development of innovative materials, processes, and tooling.

Functions

As a Mechanical Technician, you will be part of a dedicated team focused on designing, developing, and prototyping small-scale models of CERN’s next-generation superconducting magnets.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge accelerator technology and push the boundaries of precision engineering.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Mechanical Workshop and Contractor Coordination: Managing the mechanical workshop, performing programming and machining operations on CNC machines (e.g., milling, turning on a lathe), coordinating a small team of mechanical technicians, and liaising with internal workshops for subcontracting parts as needed.
  • Manufacturing and Assembly: Machining and assembling high-precision mechanical components.
  • Prototype Development: Contributing to the design and validation of components, tooling, and assembly processes for model magnet construction. This includes refining components and tooling, using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software.

If you're passionate about precision engineering and hands-on prototyping, this is your chance to take part in innovative projects at the forefront of accelerator technology.

Qualifications

Technical certificate or general secondary education or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering, or a related field.

Higher technical diploma or higher administrative diploma or equivalent relevant experience (French equivalent: Diplôme de technicien supérieur) inmechanical engineering, or a related field

Experience:

Proven experience in

  • Mechanics, manufacturing techniques, and assembly of complex systems to tight tolerances;
  • CNC programming and machining operations (e.g., milling, turning on a lathe) and coordinating workshop activities, including subcontracting parts and liaising with external contractors;
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software for supporting the refinement of components and tooling.

Experience in

  • Prototyping and first-of-a-kind development, including constructing of mock-ups and dedicated tooling;
  • Inspection, quality control, and testing of mechanical components to ensure compliance with specifications.

Technical competencies:

  • Manufacturing of mechanical parts;using CNC machines;
  • Reading of 2D drawings and 3D models, including ISO-GPS dimensioning and cabling diagram.
  • Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation;
  • Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment;

Behavioural competencies:

  • Achieving Results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind;
  • Demonstrating Accountability: working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises;
  • Working in Teams: understanding when teamwork is required to achieve the best results; including others accordingly and sharing information;
  • Demonstrating Flexibility: demonstrating a willingness to accept changing circumstances; supporting initiatives for change;
  • Learning and Sharing Knowledge: keeping up-to-date with developments in own field of expertise and readily absorbing new information.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.
