Job Description

Your responsibilities

The ALICE experiment at CERN has recently completed a major upgrade, entering a new operational phase in 2022. Central to this upgrade is a cutting-edge computing system capable of handling data throughput nearly 100 times greater than before. Supporting this transformation is a modern, evolving web-based toolset that provides centralised access to scientific and operational metadata, aids data acquisition, and streamlines reporting for teams and management.

We are looking for a motivated developer to join us in CERN's Experimental Physics Department.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Developing, maintaining, and enhancing web applications supporting the ALICE experiment;
• Designing and deploying new features to improve data access, validation workflows, and decision support for researchers and management;
• Collaborating closely with end-users and experts to gather requirements, incorporate feedback, and refine tool usability;
• Ensuring the reliability, performance, and maintainability of applications in a production setting;
• Working alongside developers, analysts, and operations teams to integrate back-end services and data workflows;
• Utilising relational databases and modern web technologies such as Node.js, ES6 JavaScript, Webpack, and Virtual DOM.

Your profile

Skills:

• Required skills and experience:
  • Solid experience in front-end and back-end web development with ability to build interactive and user-friendly web-based user interfaces;
  • Proficiency in modern programming techniques and languages, including JavaScript, JSX, Node.js, and Express;
  • Experience with RESTful APIs and asynchronous programming patterns;
  • Ability to write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code.
• Optional skills and experience:
  • Experience with software development life cycle practices and tools such as Git, automated testing frameworks (e.g. Mocha), browser automation (e.g. Puppeteer), and Continuous Integration pipelines;
  • Knowledge of relational databases, particularly MariaDB, and experience writing efficient, secure SQL queries;
  • Understanding of component-based architectures and front-end frameworks (e.g., React, Lit, or similar);
  • Experience working in collaborative, interdisciplinary environments, providing user support or technical guidance.
• Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Software Engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
• You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
• Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
• Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Additional Information

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.
