Asset Economist

Hours: Fulltime

Location: Baar, Switzerland

THE POSITION

The Asset Economist (AE) plays a key role in maximizing the commercial value of Varo’s Cressier refinery. The AE ensures the smooth implementation of monthly operating plans by optimizing crude and feedstock intakes using linear programming (LP) models.

As the first point of contact for daily operational matters at the Cressier refinery, the AE implements short-term economic strategies and provides creative solutions to operational challenges. The AE also collaborates continuously with supply, logistics, and trading teams to ensure alignment and provides weekly updates on the progress of plan implementation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Preparing the monthly operating plans
  • Using LP models to derive economically optimized crude batching and define refinery crude diet composition.
  • Preparing and analyzing scenarios for end-to-end value chain optimization.
  • Determining demand and timing for feedstock and intermediate imports/exports.
  • Monitoring deviations between LP plans and actuals, and challenging refinery constraints.
  • Running daily refinery operations
    • Ensuring smooth daily operations and implementation of the monthly production plan.
    • Leading regular update meetings with internal stakeholders on refinery status and economics.
    • Providing import/export economics for feedstocks and products.
    • Anticipating challenges and identifying optimization opportunities.
    • Supporting on-site planning and scheduling teams.
    • Building collaborative relationships along the fuel value chain.
    • Traveling bi-monthly to the refinery for on-site meetings.
  • Data visualization and analysis
    • Developing PowerBI tools for data analysis.
    • Analyzing trends to identify optimization potentials, including product quality and demand scenarios.
    Your Profile - Essential
    • Team player with a commercial mindset and excellent communication skills.
    • Experience in refinery planning & economics or similar roles.
    • Fluent in English and proficient in French.
    • Experience with LP models is a strong advantage.
    • Proficiency in PowerBI.
