Beendigen provides FREE talk, text or chat support and services for Indigenous women across Ontario. We are a confidential, non-judgmental and culturally grounded helpline available 24 hours, 7 days a week. We are seeking dedicated and resourceful Talk4Healing Relief Helpline Crisis Workers with a passion for helping women through emotional and crisis support/intervention.

Indigenous Women are encouraged to apply. First preference will be given to all qualified Indigenous applicants.

RELIEF HELPLINE CRISIS WORKER

Position Title: Relief Helpline Crisis Worker

Hours of Work: 0 to 40 hours per week, based on the needs of the organization

Salary: $22.41/hr

Competition Number: RHL-04-07

Position Summary

Relief Helpline Crisis Workers are responsible for providing coverage and support services, in multiple Indigenous languages, English or French to callers on the Anishinabe Women’s Help Line during weekdays and weekends within an Anishinabe Health and Wellness Framework.

Key Responsibilities/Duties
  1. To work from a holistic perspective, utilizing the teachings of the medicine wheel and Seven Grandfather Teachings.
  2. To take personal responsibility to increase sensitivity, awareness and implementation of Beendigen’s cultural teachings and organizational practices in both professional conduct and work-related deliverables.
  3. To be prepared to work in conjunction with the philosophy and mandate of the organization.
  4. To preserve confidentiality of all residents, clients, staff, students, volunteers and agency information.
  5. To represent the organization in a positive and professional manner at all times.
  6. To provide shift coverage and support to full-time staff during weekdays, statutory holidays and weekends.
  7. To provide emotional and crisis support/intervention, safety planning, information and referrals to Anishinabe women to assess their situation, particularly with reference to their safety.
  8. To provide reliable and accurate information and services referral to Anishinabe women fleeing violent relationships.
  9. To provide information, support and assistance to friends, families, and service providers in contact with abused Anishinabe women.
  10. To maintain records of all calls according to the format and guidelines set out by the Help Line.
  11. To operate in an unbiased, woman-positive, and non-judgmental manner, consistent with the philosophy of the service.
  12. To keep up to date with necessary information in order to accurately assess a caller’s situation and to determine appropriate community resources.
  13. To attend all mandatory training within the Help Line’s internal training series as per agency policy.
  14. To access necessary services on behalf of callers in cases of emergency while respecting confidentiality.
  15. To maintain co-operative working relationships and participate in the general operation of the agency.
  16. To utilize downtime in an effective manner, i.e., debriefing, grounding, and reading relevant materials.
  17. To report all cases of suspected child abuse as required by the Child and Family Services Act.
  18. To ensure Health and Safety compliance in the workplace.
  19. To follow confidential handling of client information as dictated by Privacy Legislation.
  20. To constructively participate in staff meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required.
  21. To adhere to all policies and procedures and ensure adherence to program best practices.
  22. Any other duties as requested by the Program Supervisor; commensurate with role.
Key Selection Criteria

Required:

  1. An appropriate Bachelor’s Degree or College Diploma with 2 to 3 years relevant experience. Comparable combination of education and experience will be considered.

Preferred:

  1. Bilingual in English and Ojibway, Oji-Cree or Cree, other indigenous language or French.
  2. Experience working in an Indigenous organization.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  1. Specialize in one-on-one counselling.
  2. Extensive knowledge and experience in family violence issues.
  3. Ability to view situations free from personal values, interests, beliefs, or judgment.
  4. Ability to handle difficult situations and distance oneself from client’s problems or emotions.
  5. Excellent computer and database entry skills.
  6. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  7. Knowledge about sensitivity to cultural differences and various economic backgrounds.
  8. Ability to act quickly and appropriately in situations of conflict in a direct, non-confrontational way.
  9. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Working Conditions

Relief Helpline Crisis Workers usually work in a call center environment, but may sometimes work in non-standard workplaces. Hours of work are relief, normally 8 hours per day, in a 24/7, 365 days a year work environment with occasional overtime.

Employment is subject to:
  • Must provide a successful Police Criminal Records Check (PCRP) and Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC).
  • Ability to work shift work, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Must sign Oath of Confidentiality.
  • Must provide proof of full Covid-19 vaccination or medical exemption.
  • Must have First Aid Certification Level C CPR & AED.
  • Must have Ontario Safe Food Handler Certification.
  • Must have use of a working cellular device and be able to download and use work required applications.
