Position description

The Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery is inviting applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a three-year, renewable appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The successful applicant will demonstrate clinical expertise in the area of stroke neurology, and will be expected to participate in the activities of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) Stroke Prevention Clinic and to work towards the continuing development of the MUHC stroke program, with its emphasis on excellence in clinical care, training, and developing innovative care with community partners.

The candidate will be appointed to clinical practice at the MUHC, which includes major McGill University-affiliated teaching hospitals at several sites in downtown Montreal. Neurologists and neurologist-scientists provide tertiary in-patient and out-patient neurological care, engage in a wide range of clinical and basic neuroscience research, and lead strong clinical neuroscience teaching programs in undergraduate and postgraduate medicine at the Montreal Neurological Hospital and Institute, Montreal General Hospital, and the Royal Victoria Hospital. Out-patient activities will be based at the Montreal General Hospital, Stroke Prevention Clinic. This tertiary referral clinic is a key element in developing a world-leading translational research program.

The Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery is part of McGill, Canada’s most international university, which is located in vibrant, multicultural Montreal, in the francophone province of Quebec. The neuroscience community at McGill and in greater Montreal is one of the largest and most diverse in North America.

The Neuro has embarked on a journey to set a global precedent as the first academic institute to fully embrace the principles of Open Science. In that context, the Institute highly encourages its researchers to work under these principles.

Job Duties

The successful applicant will contribute to a strong clinical and research program, and be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (teaching, research and involvement in academic and administrative committees), provide excellent clinical teaching and supervision to residents and medical students, and to pursue scholarly activities in advancing clinical care and/or clinical research in the area of cerebrovascular neurology.

McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent) and be eligible for licensure in Quebec and certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec;
  • Have advanced training and the demonstrated capacity to excel in academic neurology, including sub-specialty clinical expertise, strong medical education skills, and/or well-defined clinical or basic research training and interests. Clinical innovators who are developing novel clinical approaches or methods are strongly encouraged to apply;
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in all areas;
  • Have a good working knowledge of French or a commitment to become fluent in French.

Faculty/Department/Unit: Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery
Employee Type: Contract Academic Staff ('Academic Contractual')
Rank: Assistant/Associate Professor
Salary: Remuneration will be according to Quebec health care fee schedule
Job Status: Full-time

Posting Period: 30 days from date of posting

McGill University is an English-language university where most teaching and research activities are conducted in the English language, thereby requiring English communication both verbally and in writing.

L’Université McGill est une institution de langue anglaise dans laquelle la majorité des activités d’enseignement et de recherche s’effectuent en langue anglaise, rendant essentielle l’utilisation de l’anglais pour la communication orale et écrite.

McGill University is committed to equity and diversity within its community and values academic rigour and excellence. We welcome and encourage applications from racialized persons/visible minorities, women, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities, and persons of minority sexual orientations and gender identities, as well as from all qualified candidates with the skills and knowledge to engage productively with diverse communities.

At McGill, research that reflects diverse intellectual traditions, methodologies, and modes of dissemination and translation is valued and encouraged. Candidates are invited to demonstrate their research impact both within and across academic disciplines and in other sectors, such as government, communities, or industry.

McGill further recognizes and fairly considers the impact of leaves (e.g., family care or health-related) that may contribute to career interruptions or slowdowns. Candidates are encouraged to signal any leave that affected productivity, or that may have had an effect on their career path. This information will be considered to ensure the equitable assessment of the candidate’s record.

McGill implements an employment equity program and encourages members of designated equity groups to self-identify. It further seeks to ensure the equitable treatment and full inclusion of persons with disabilities by striving for the implementation of universal design principles transversally, across all facets of the University community, and through accommodation policies and procedures. Persons with disabilities who anticipate needing accommodations for any part of the application process may contact, in confidence, accessibilityrequest.hr@mcgill.ca.

All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply; however, in accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
