About Trail Operations

Teck's Trail Operations, located in the community of Trail in British Columbia, is one of the world's largest fully integrated zinc and lead smelting and refining complexes. Located in the beautiful West Kootenay region of southeastern, British Columbia, Trail offers outdoor adventure at your fingertips.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Group Leader, Execution and Infrastructure, working in the Metallurgy Development group, the Technologist, Metallurgy & Technology - Temporary is responsible to conduct technical investigations that contribute to the development and improvement of operating plant processes and process control across all plants in Trail Operations; work on evaluation of potential future flowsheet modifications, provide technical assistance to Trail Operations on operating and maintenance problems. This role involves working both as an individual and as part of a team. It typically focuses on non-routine work and requires being able to adapt to shifting priorities.

Please note that the work schedule for this position will be variable with combinations of 5x2 and/or 4x3/3x4 days/night work or other continuous operation schedules during periods of piloting / test trials.

Key Responsibilities
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Develop, manage, and lead technical investigations and develop detailed test execution plan from a general project outline including bench scale lab work, pilot plant operation, and full scale process sampling surveys or plant trials
  • Develop, plan, construct, operate, troubleshoot and modify laboratory, pilot and plant scale equipment
  • Submit written reports detailing the investigation and including data obtained, analysis of data, and recommendations; collect, coordinate and analyze data from several sources
  • Assist with startup and process development stages and contribute to engineering studies of a project including drawing and marking up, PFDs, P&IDs, Equipment Diagrams; Equipment Layouts; write operating procedures and contribute to the development of Controlled Documents
  • Participate and contribute to risk assessments at all phases of a project
  • Perform routine and non-routine testing procedures and sampling techniques; develop new testing and sampling procedures under minimal supervision; perform physical and chemical analyses of plant samples; perform laboratory simulations to assess the effects of proposed changes on plant processes
  • Assist in training and directing the work of other technical staff. ; Act as a mentor to coop students and EITs on the practical aspects of their work assignments
  • Maintain effective communication with other technical personnel in various business areas, with supervision, operations and trades personnel including hand over of projects
  • Use knowledge of metallurgical processes and instrumentation employed at Trail Operations to adjust quickly to new plants or processes; may undertake assignments in other business areas or Teck properties
Qualifications
  • Graduate of a recognized Institute of Technology or University in metallurgical, mineral processing or chemical sciences or certified with Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC) in a relevant field is required
  • A minimum of 5 years relevant experience with working knowledge of physical, chemical and metallurgical processes is required
  • An ability to work both independently and as part of a team to contribute to the success of a technical group is required
  • Highly organized self-starter with strong time management skills are a must
  • Proficiency in computer systems: MS Office, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel is required.
  • Experience with Trail's process data systems, (e.g. PDH, LIMS, GE Aps) or metallurgical modelling software an asset

Pay Range: $46.80/hr

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
