Job summary

Ottawa Police Service in Ottawa is seeking a Youth In Policing Initiative Coordinator to support the Youth Section during the winter term. The role offers 12–35 hours per week and pays $23.35 per hour, with work to be determined location of work.

You will assist with hiring, plan and schedule activities, supervise and mentor students, oversee all program tasks, provide guidance, and coordinate with section supervisors and community partners to ensure tasks are completed and goals met.

Qualifications

  • One semester of post-secondary education required.
  • Experience supervising is an asset.
  • Experience working with youth is an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Eligible to work in Canada.
  • Must return to post-secondary education full-time in the fall.
  • Successful completion of the recruitment/background check.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with hiring of YIPI students.
  • Plan and schedule all program activities.
  • Supervise students to ensure tasks are completed.
  • Oversee all program activities during the placement.
  • Provide advice, guidance and assistance to YIPI students.
  • Monitor performance issues and advise the police program coordinator.
  • Support Crime Prevention initiatives and liaise with supervisors and community contacts.

Overall Purpose

The Youth in Policing Initiative is a Provincially funded program for youth attending a secondary school program. Participants will be provided with an opportunity to learn about the Ottawa Police Service, our community, and to develop new skills to increase their future employability. The program will allow students to consider policing as a viable career in the future.

The YIPI Coordinator supervises the YIPI Students for the duration of the placement.

Major Responsibilities

Under the direction and supervision of the Youth Section police coordinator(s):

  • Assist with the hiring process of the YIPI students
  • Assist with the planning and scheduling of all activities in advance of the program
  • Supervise students to ensure tasks assigned are being completed
  • Supervise and oversee all activities throughout the duration of the program
  • Provided YIPI students advice, guidance and assistance
  • Monitor and Address YIPI student performance issues and advise police program coordinator of performance issues when appropriate
  • Supervise and support Crime Prevention initiatives as assigned to YIPI students
  • Liaise with Ottawa Police Service section supervisors and community agency contacts where YIPI students are assigned to ensure tasks are being completed and any issues addressed

Statement of Required Qualifications

Education:

  • At minimum, must have completed successfully one semester of a post-secondary education program

Experience:

  • Previous office experience is considered an asset
  • Previous experience supervising an asset
  • Previous experience working with youth an asset
  • Microsoft Office (especially Word and Excel)
  • Internet search engines, an asset

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • At minimum, must have completed successfully one semester of a post-secondary education program and be returning to a post-secondary education program full-time in the fall
  • Successfully complete the recruitment/background check process.

Hours of Work

Monday to Friday day shift schedule

Occasional requirement for evenings.

Effort and Working Conditions

The Coordinator may be required to work intermittently from November to December and/or full time one to two weeks before the start of the program to assist with administrative duties and planning related to the program. Program schedule and hours/week to be determined.

Desired Qualifications
  • French, is an asset, but not required
  • Knowledge of other language(s), an asset
