Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. seeks a skilled supervisor to oversee service and repair teams for transportation and equipment used in solid waste collection and processing.

You will direct repairs, plan maintenance, and manage parts procurement while ensuring safety and compliance with regulations. You will collaborate with the Maintenance Manager/General Manager to release equipment for inspection, plan activities, and ensure monthly PO management and end-of-month reporting.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, or two plus years related experience or training.
  • Possess a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Completion of DOT certification for air brake inspection and annual vehicle inspections.
  • Completion of company-provided/sponsored training programs.

Responsibilities

  • Manage service and repair personnel by assigning and directing activities, following up on repairs and appraising performance.
  • Coordinate release of equipment from service for inspection or repair with Maintenance/General Manager.
  • Plan and schedule repairs in planner and procure parts.
  • Oversee tire program and tire scrap outs.
  • Manage POs monthly and reconcile with corporate purchasing card.
  • Maintain all vehicle inspections, maintenance and safety records as required.
  • Hire, train and monitor service and repair personnel; direct ongoing training.

Job description

Perform functions to safely supervise, repair, direct and coordinate performance of the employees involved with the service and repair of transportation, hydraulic and other solid waste collection and/or processing equipment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage service and repair personnel by assigning and directing activities, following up on repairs being made, perform repairs as needed and appraise performance of shop personnel.
  • Confer with Maintenance Manager/General Manager to arrange for equipment such as motor vehicles, compaction equipment, support equipment and other equipment utilized by the division to be released from service for inspection, service or repair.
  • Plan and schedule repairs in TMW planner and procure all parts for successful plan.
  • Oversee all aspects of the tire program and attend all tire scrap outs.
  • Manage PO's on a monthly basis and reconcile TMW with Corporate Purchasing Card.
  • Manage month end close process consisting of all EOM reports and inventory integrity.
  • Authorize and arrange purchase of supplies, tools, uniforms and machinery and contracts for repair services not performed in shop with Maintenance Manager/General Manager approval.
  • Follow policies for inspection, maintenance and repair of vehicles.
  • Investigate and evaluate the cause and extent of damage to vehicles or property as a result of accidents.
  • Assist Maintenance Manager/General Manager with hiring, training and monitoring performance of service and repair personnel.
  • Identify, direct or perform ongoing training of service and repair personnel.
  • Maintain all vehicle inspections, maintenance and safety records required by federal, state or local agencies and company policies.
  • Act as the backup for the Shop Supervisor/Maintenance Manager if there is not one at the location.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Conform in all respects with applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations, ordinances and other orders and to all company policies, procedures and directives from supervisors.
  • Attend safety and branch meetings.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by management.
Machines, Tools and Equipment:
  • Full set of hand tools required.
  • Knowledge of welding, compactor repair, air brake inspection, vehicle inspections.
Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of individuals.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commission, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume and apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram format.
  • Ability to problem solve.
Requirements:
  • Associate degree or equivalent from a two (2) year college or technical school; or two (2) plus years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possess a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Completion of DOT certification for air brake inspection and adjustment and annual vehicle inspections.
  • Completion of all company provided/sponsored technical training programs, supervisory training programs and continuing education programs.
Physical/Mental Demands:
  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, taste, and smell.
  • Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to regularly lift/move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift/move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in usually loud conditions.
Working Conditions:
  • Frequently exposed to loud noise, humidity, hot and cold weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • Occasionally work in high precarious places.
  • Work environment is usually loud.
  • Work in an outdoor environment 90% of the time.
