Job summary

GFL Environmental is seeking a Heavy Duty Mechanic to keep our fleet running safely and efficiently. You will perform preventive maintenance, inspect, diagnose, and repair vehicles and equipment with minimal supervision to support our operations.

Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, diagnostics of electrical/hydraulic systems, and documenting repairs. The role requires a 421A certification and at least two years of hands-on experience in heavy equipment maintenance.

Qualifications

  • Valid 421A Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Certification.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in automotive, truck, or heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Working knowledge of fuel, ignition, cooling, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and air brake systems; read hydraulic schematics.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and safety checks on vehicles and equipment.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair electrical, hydraulic, suspension, brake, and air systems; use vehicle computer electronics to initiate repairs.
  • Handle emergency breakdown service calls and complete repairs within Standard Repair Times (SRTs).
  • Accurately document repairs, parts usage, and repair times in fleet maintenance software; review DVIRs.
  • Estimate time and material costs for repairs and requisition necessary parts.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and OSHA-compliant work area.
  • Assist in orienting and training apprentices and communicate maintenance needs to operations.

Requirements:
  • Licensing: Valid 421A Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Certification registered in the Skilled Trades of Canada.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience in automotive, truck, or heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Technical Proficiency: Working knowledge of fuel, ignition, cooling, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and air brake systems; ability to read hydraulic schematics.
  • Diagnostic Skills: Ability to utilize vehicle computer electronics systems to interpret failure modes and effectively diagnose defects.
  • Safety Commitment: Ability to successfully satisfy all company standards for safety-sensitive positions; deep knowledge of safety procedures and practices.
  • Reliability: Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and document repairs accurately.
Responsibilities:

  • Documentation & Planning: Accurately document repairs, parts usage, and repair times using fleet maintenance software; review and complete repairs identified on Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs).
  • Parts Management: Estimate time and material costs for repairs and requisition necessary parts.
  • Facility Upkeep: Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant work area in strict accordance with Corporate and OSHA standards.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to all established safety procedures and perform all work in a safe manner.
  • Team Collaboration: Assist in orienting and training apprentices as required, and effectively communicate maintenance needs to operations.
