Job summary

Workers' Compensation Advisor

As a member of the Rehabilitation Management team, the person in this position oversees and manages employee claims and appeals related to workers' compensation insurance. They ensure that all employees receive support during their absence due to occupational illness or injury, with care and class, while applying consistent and comprehensive practices to facilitate their recovery and return to safe and sustainable employment.

Responsibilities
Management of claims submitted to a workers' compensation board
  • Collect and review all relevant information to validate each new reimbursement request related to an occupational injury or illness and forward reports to the concerned provincial workers' compensation boards within regulated deadlines.
  • Take charge with confidence of claims submitted to a workers' compensation board, from the opening to the closing of the claim, particularly regarding cost analysis and supervision.
  • Promote stay-at-work options to reduce reimbursement request costs and lost work days.
  • Communicate regularly with employees, managers, and workers' compensation boards to help advance requests by closely following treatment plans and determining return-to-work opportunities.
  • Establish a clear and strategic request management action plan, particularly regarding communications and follow-ups.
  • Challenge claims using workers' compensation board regulations and policies based on validity, status, or duration issues, all through intents to contest, requests for reconsideration, and medical examinations.
  • Undertake reconsideration, medical arbitration, and appeal proceedings before provincial courts and appeal boards, as a representative of Air Canada and within set legislative deadlines.
  • Understand, analyze, reduce, and challenge the costs of all requests, particularly for income loss reimbursements, treatment plans, or any other related services and fees, when necessary.
  • Implement and support the process of canceling costs related to erroneous claims.
  • Ensure claims management with ethics and rigorous compliance with privacy laws and other relevant laws, policies, and agreements.
  • Thoroughly review and understand all necessary information, then transmit it to workers' compensation boards or disability insurance providers. They will thus be able to make informed decisions for each request, in accordance with operating policies and taking into account stakeholder concerns.
  • Proactively collaborate with all Air Canada departments, insurance providers (if applicable), and workers' compensation boards to organize, implement, and accelerate a rapid and safe return to work, all while prioritizing the well-being and safety of employees.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on workers' compensation board operating policies and legislation.
  • Perform other tasks assigned by the Manager – Rehabilitation Management.
Return to work and employee accommodation measures
  • Ensure the proper maintenance of the claims portfolio by ensuring data accuracy, file updates, and workload reporting to accurately reflect the status of each claim.
  • Act as a subject matter expert regarding the duty to accommodate employees and rapid return-to-work planning.
  • Collect and evaluate standard health guidelines determined by workers' compensation boards and current medical restrictions.
  • Collaborate with the return-to-work advisor and all concerned stakeholders to support rapid return-to-work opportunities and strategies adapted to each case and develop return-to-work plans aimed at ensuring employees resume their position or occupy an adapted position upon their return to work, whether temporarily or long-term.
  • Be able to identify, resolve, and manage non-medical obstacles.
  • Prioritize stay-at-work opportunities by working closely with Air Canada stakeholders to resolve obstacles attributable to the return to work.
  • Provide support and training to internal and external stakeholders regarding Air Canada workers' compensation insurance practices.
Qualifications
  • At least three years of hands-on experience in disability case management with a workers' compensation board or in managing workers' compensation insurance claims.
  • Strong analytical and critical decision-making skills.
  • Initiative, maturity, and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain meaningful relationships with internal and external partners.
  • High concentration, task focus, lack of judgment and understanding of the limits and scope of practice.
  • Proven ability to motivate others.
  • Experience in the airline industry and its operations, an asset.
  • Advanced computer skills, including keyboarding, navigation, and data entry, and experience with the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Experience with integrated human resources information systems and claim management systems.
  • Practical knowledge of relevant policies, legislation, and principles related to workers' compensation insurance and employee accommodation measures.
Education
  • Post-secondary diploma in human resources, occupational health, kinesiology, nursing, social sciences, social work, business administration, or a related field. A combination of study and work experience of equivalent relevance and rigor may also be considered.
  • Certification from the National Institute of Disability Management and Research (NIDMAR), an asset.
Conditions of Employment:

Candidates must be eligible to work in the country concerned at the time a job offer is presented and are responsible for obtaining work permits, visas, or other necessary authorizations. Proof of eligibility must be provided before the start date.
