The Natural Resource Stewardship Division within the Department of Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures is seeking a qualified candidate for the Wildlife Technician position in Thompson, Manitoba. Dedicated to preserving Manitoba’s biodiversity, the division protects and manages fish and wildlife for the benefit of all Manitobans. We develop policies and legislation that support the conservation of species and ecosystems. Through a variety of programs, we work to protect, conserve, enhance, and manage the more than 35,000 species of wild plants and animals that call Manitoba home. These programs are expertly delivered by our biologists, planners, technicians, support staff, and partners to ensure the conservation of these precious resources for future generations.
Conditions of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must possess and maintain a valid full Class 5 Manitoba driver’s licence
- Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, including fieldwork in rough terrain and on water, across all seasons and under adverse weather conditions
- Must be willing and able to work evenings, weekends, and overtime, as required
- Must be willing and able to travel to remote locations for extended periods, using various modes of transportation such as chartered aircraft, train, ATV, and snowmobile
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree in Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or Biology. An equivalent combination of training and experience may also be considered.
- Experience in collecting, managing, and analyzing field data.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain positive working relationships with diverse staff and stakeholders.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Strong written communication skills.
- Experience driving a pick-up truck and trailer, all-terrain vehicles, and other off-road vehicles etc.
Desired:
- Ability to perform routine maintenance on quads, snowmobiles, and trailers.
- Experience with GPS navigational equipment, GIS software, and mapping applications.
- A valid Canadian Firearms Program Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL).
- Certification in Standard First Aid and CPR.
Duties:
Under the supervision of the Regional Wildlife Manager, the incumbent will be responsible for collecting, organizing, and analyzing data for wildlife management programs in the Northeast region. These programs include surveys related to wildlife habitat assessments and population monitoring, particularly for species at risk files (e.g., caribou).
