Job Description

The Welding Production Supervisor is accountable for safe, efficient and timely completion of all vessel refit and repair work performed by respective trade at Victoria Shipyards. Primary responsibilities include planning and monitoring assigned projects and ensuring that they are appropriately staffed and supervised to meet schedule, budget and customer requirements. The Welding Production Supervisor is also responsible to ensure that all work is carried out in accordance shipyard safety, quality, and environment standards, policies and procedures.

Job Description

The Welding Production Supervisor is accountable for safe, efficient and timely completion of all vessel refit and repair work performed by respective trade at Victoria Shipyards. Primary responsibilities include planning and monitoring assigned projects and ensuring that they are appropriately staffed and supervised to meet schedule, budget and customer requirements. The Welding Production Supervisor is also responsible to ensure that all work is carried out in accordance shipyard safety, quality, and environment standards, policies and procedures.

The role provides departmental leadership, direction and motivation by managing department charge-hands to ensure productivity and quality levels are consistently met. The Welding Production Supervisor provides initiative and direction for continuous process improvement activities within the assigned department.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 825 Admirals Road, Victoria.

What You'll Do

Operations and Team Management

  • Manage assigned trade labour by providing workers as dictated by work schedules and stage of construction superintendents. Allocate manpower to stages of construction in accordance schedule and priorities, assigning workers with the skill and ability to efficiently complete scheduled work.
  • In collaboration with the Welding Support Supervisor ensure trade workers have the skills, equipment and certifications required to perform planned work activities.
  • Manage charge-hands to ensure that work is completed within the allocated budget and schedule.
  • Coordinate trade work with other trades and stage of construction managers to minimize interference and maximize productivity.
  • Monitor projects through the various stages of construction to ensure workmanship meets Seaspan welding quality metrics, applicable codes, Standard Operating Procedures, and contract requirements.
  • Supports the Welding Superintendent; other Production Trade Supervisor’s Manager, Technical; and Manager, Procurement to ensure technical information and materials meet trade requirements.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to trade charge-hands and workers by providing guidance and training where needed to maintain applicable standards.
  • Improve departmental skill and productivity levels to assess skill and work habits of individual employees, and implement improvement plans as required.
  • Review and validate project estimates with Estimating Department representatives.
  • Monitor work progress with trade charge-hands and assess project status, fixes and escalates work stoppages/issues as required. Report work progress/ stoppages to Welding Superintendent or other Production Trade Supervisor’s and program personnel.


Safety and Administration

  • Ensures that a strong safety culture is instilled within the Welding Department
  • Conduct regular maintenance and safety inspections for equipment, facilities and work sites ensuring that deficiencies are quickly rectified.
  • Work with disability and rehabilitation consultants in assisting injured employees return to work on a graduated basis by identifying appropriate tasks and conditions.


What You'll Bring

  • Grade 12 education plus post-secondary training in respective trade.
  • Completion of trade apprenticeship and/or advanced education beneficial.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience managing trade workers in a shipbuilding or large manufacturing environment.
  • CSA 47.1 Supervisor and CSA 178.2 qualifications are desirable
  • Extensive trade knowledge including current work methods and procedures, materials, quality standards and inspection procedures.
  • Ability to manage workers in a matrix organization that requires reporting to applicable trade and stage of construction superintendents.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Basic knowledge of ABS, Lloyds Register rules for building and classing steel vessels.
  • Detailed knowledge of worker training and qualification processes.
  • Ability to develop, execute and successfully secure applicable qualifications and certifications for respective trade.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including change leadership, performance development, and team effectiveness.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written correspondence.
  • Basic understanding of marine terminology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, management and workforce.
  • High standards of business conduct and ethics and ability to deal with all situations and issues with integrity and honesty.
  • Excellent technical, analytical, problem solving, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of modern safety practices and procedures. '

The estimated salary for this position is $112,500 - $137,500. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
