Job summary

DEW Engineering and Development is seeking a skilled Welder to join our Ottawa-based manufacturing team. You will fabricate products to specifications, read blueprints, and perform in-process inspection to ensure quality.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years of related experience, MIG and TIG welding proficiency, and the ability to work with diverse teams in a high-volume production environment. DEW is an equal opportunity employer and offers a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of related welding experience.

  • Ability to perform in-process inspection and document results.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate products safely and to provided specifications.
  • Set up production fixtures and ensure product quality.
  • Read fabrication drawings/prints and verify tolerances.
  • Inspect assemblies for defects and record results.
  • Operate and maintain welding equipment and related tooling.
  • Assist and/or perform work in other areas as needed.

WELDER

Reporting to the Welding Supervisor, welders are responsible to fabricate products safely and efficiently to provided specifications.

Responsibilities & Duties:

Possesses advanced understanding of established procedures and ability to apply knowledge to unusual and complex production problems, sometimes requiring fixture fabrication

Able to set up production fabrication fixtures to ensure quality of product

Read and interpret fabrication drawings/prints

Perform in-process inspection by visually or mechanically inspecting assemblies for defects (cracks, chips, dimension, surface finish, etc); records results and notifies lead/supervisor of deviation as appropriate

May use one or more of the following for measuring and inspection: Tape Measure, various types of Micrometers and Calipers

Train incoming employees on department work instructions, and inspection/test procedures

Use the manufacturing computer system for basic departmental functions, such as entering part transfers, closing operations and scrap; reports any discrepancies to lead or supervisor

Perform tasks utilizing various welding processes, which could include GMAW, SMAW, GTAW, MIG, SAW

Perform maintenance and repair of welding equipment

Understands and meets or exceeds quality standards; seeks to minimize reject rate

Assists and/or performs work in any and all areas as assigned.

May work any and all shifts/days as required

Other:

Travel as required

Adhere to all environmental, health and safety regulations and follow the environmental and quality management systems

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Minimum 5+ years of related experience, 3+ years of direct experience

Experience in MIG and TIG welding

Post secondary education as a Welder/Fitter is preferred

MIG Aluminum/Steel Canadian Welding Bureau certification would be a significant asset

Must have, or be eligible for, all current applicable certifications

Experience operating a variety of production equipment and machines

Experience reading, interpreting and following blueprints and welding symbol

Previous experience working in a high-volume production facility

Functional/Technical Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Must have knowledge of wire and filler materials applications for various steel alloys and aluminum

Must have working knowledge of fixturing and weld set up parameters

Must be able to work with a diverse variety of people from different cultures and backgrounds

Required to pass tests to meet certification standards of governmental agencies or professional and technical associations
