Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform welding/cutting tasks including arc welding, gas welding, and semi-automatic methods to prepare tasks.

• Read drawings and blueprints to plan fabrication and welding.
• Inspect welds and workmanship for defects and document results.

Job Profile

Under the supervision of the Lead Welder or designate, the Welder is responsible for welding, diagnosing, testing, lays out and fabricates component parts and vehicle repairs for various City Departments and, in particular, the Winnipeg Fleet Management Agency.

As The Welder You Will

• Perform welding/cutting tasks such as arc welding, gas welding, cutting semi-automatic welding, etc. to disassemble, assemble and prepare tasks which include selection of methods, tools, equipment and material.
• Perform necessary repairs on all types of vehicles, equipment and component parts.
• Perform diagnosis (by testing or inspection), ensuring the problem is diagnosed correctly.
• Estimate/verify time and material required to complete tasks ensuring necessary repairs are completed.
• Read and interpret drawings or blueprints estimating material and time to fabricate or modify projects to include inspecting, material, welds and workmanship for defects.
• Reject and take appropriate action documenting all test results.
• Operate and maintain various types of welding equipment, hand tools and facility equipment.
• Perform all duties within the established safety rules and regulations and good housekeeping practices in the shops, garage and yards.
• Complete reports or records as required.
• Keep relevant knowledge and skills current.
• Maintain cooperative welding relations with other Departments, Divisions and Branches or related work groups, as well as the private sector to enhance utility performance.
• Assist in training of new employees and junior personnel/apprentice level welders new to classification.
• Perform other duties consistent with the classification as assigned; including the proper operation, cleaning, and maintenance of any assigned vehicle, the perusal of the city for unsafe conditions in the course of carrying out the daily activities and report/ratifying irregularities.

Your Education And Qualifications Include

• A valid Journeyperson Welder Certificate with Interprovincial Status and demonstrated ability in the trade.
• Possess a valid Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) ticket, or able to obtain the same within 3 months of being appointed to the position.
• Significant experience (approximately five 5 years) as a Journeyperson Welder.
• Proficient in the areas of Oxy-Acetylene, SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, MCAW.
• Experience reading blueprints, as well as fabricating components from design drawings.
• Ability to work independently, with a minimum of supervision and/or direction.
• Ability to exercise initiative and sound judgement.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and supervisors.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Excellent customer service skills with the ability to deal effectively with staff members, members of other City departments and the public.
• Experience and proficiency in AutoCAD would be considered an asset.
• Experience performing welding functions in the field is an asset.
• Knowledge of heavy-duty equipment repair would be an asset.

Conditions Of Employment

• The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
• Must possess a valid Journeyperson Welder Certificate with Interprovincial Status.
• Must possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's License and the ability to obtain a Class 3 Driver's License with air brake endorsement within 1 year (training provided).
• Must be physically capable of performing the duties of this position, which may include, but is not limited to:
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs., crouching, crawling, climbing, working at heights, working in confined spaces, working with arms above head, etc.).
• Must provide own hand tools consistent with trade requirements.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a level 2 security clearance from the Winnipeg Police Service from the successful candidate(s).
• Must be able to work overtime as operationally required.
